Job Description:
As bp transitions to an integrated energy company, maintaining cost competitiveness, commercial visibility, and operational discipline is essential to delivering safe and efficient operations.
The Cost Excellence Specialist plays a key role in enabling data-driven decision making, commercial visibility, and cost optimization across GoA operations. Working as part of the Cost Excellence capability within the bp Technology Hub, the role combines commercial, analytical, and operational expertise to improve spend visibility, identify cost reduction opportunities, strengthen governance, and support sustainable cost performance improvement.
This role partners closely with Procurement, Finance, Operations, Contract Account Managers (CAMs), and business leaders to translate data into actionable insights, improve commercial decision-making, and drive cost excellence across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Visibility & Contract Intelligence
- Develop and maintain Contract Briefs that summarize key commercial terms, pricing structures, scope boundaries, governance requirements, and contractual obligations.
- Improve visibility of commercial commitments and cost drivers to support informed business decisions.
- Identify cost control opportunities, potential value leakage, non-billable elements, and contractual risks.
- Collaborate with Procurement, CAMs, and business collaborators to validate insights and support contract compliance.
- Maintain secure and controlled repositories of approved commercial information.
Cost Analytics & Business Intelligence
- Develop, maintain, and enhance Power BI dashboards that provide awareness of spend, suppliers, categories, and asset performance.
- Transform complex operational and financial data into actionable insights for leadership and collaborators.
- Analyze trends, cost drivers, spend patterns, and areas of financial exposure.
- Support automation initiatives that reduce manual reporting and improve data quality and accessibility.
- Deliver reporting and insights that enable faster and more informed decision-making.
Cost Optimization & Category Insights
- Conduct category-level spend analysis to identify savings opportunities and performance improvement initiatives.
- Support development of benchmark datasets and commercial intelligence to strengthen sourcing strategies and supplier negotiations.
- Evaluate impacts of process improvements, commercial strategies, and governance initiatives.
- Partner with Procurement and business teams to identify and track realized value from cost optimization efforts.
Cost Governance & Operational Discipline
- Drive closure of aged Purchase Orders to improve financial accuracy and reduce unnecessary exposure.
- Monitor contracts approach expiration and support timely contract closure activities.
- Support governance processes that improve spend control, reporting accuracy, and compliance.
- Assist with management of price books, commercial controls, and cost tracking processes.
Continuous Improvement & Work Management
- Maintain visibility of Cost Excellence activities through Azure DevOps (ADO) and other work management tools.
- Track delivery of initiatives, improvements, and collaborator requests.
- Find opportunities to streamline processes, automate reporting, and improve overall efficiency.
- Support development of scalable tools, processes, and governance frameworks that strengthen organizational cost management capability.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Build strong partnerships across Procurement, Finance, Operations, Planning, and Leadership teams.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on cost visibility, commercial clarity, and governance matters.
- Present findings, recommendations, and performance insights to collaborators at multiple organizational levels.
- Support training, knowledge sharing, and adoption of Cost Excellence tools and practices.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
Commercial & Contract Management
- Strong understanding of contract structures, pricing mechanisms, commercial terms, and supplier relationships.
- Ability to interpret contractual requirements and identify commercial risks or opportunities.
Data Analytics & Business Intelligence
- Advanced analytical skills with the ability to transform large datasets into substantial insights.
- Proficiency with Power BI, Excel, and reporting tools.
- Experience developing dashboards, important metrics, and automated reporting solutions.
Cost Management & Financial Foresight
- Understanding of cost drivers, budgeting, forecasting, spend analysis, and financial controls.
- Ability to quantify business impact and support value realization tracking.
Process Improvement & Governance
- Experience driving process improvements, governance initiatives, and operational discipline.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to run multiple priorities simultaneously.

- Strong communication and collaborator leadership skills.

Essential Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, Procurement, Finance, Engineering, Business, Data Analytics, or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in procurement, supply chain, cost management, finance, commercial operations, contract management, or related business functions.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing spending, cost drivers, supplier performance, and commercial data to support business decision-making.
- Experience working with contracts, commercial terms, pricing models, and supplier governance processes.
- Experience developing insights and recommendations using data visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI and Excel.
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders across Procurement, Finance, Operations, and Leadership teams.
- Experience working with ERP systems and enterprise data sources.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into actionable business insights.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in oil and gas, energy, manufacturing, or other asset-intensive industries.
- Experience supporting category management, strategic sourcing, supplier negotiations, or commercial strategy development.
- Experience building Power BI dashboards and automated reporting solutions from multiple data sources.
- Experience identifying and tracking cost savings, cost avoidance, and value realization opportunities.
- Familiarity with contract lifecycle management, purchase order governance, and spend control processes.
- Experience supporting continuous improvement, process optimization, or business transformation initiatives.
- Knowledge of benchmarking methodologies, should-cost analysis, and commercial analytics.
- Exposure to Azure DevOps (ADO), Power Automate, SharePoint, and related digital productivity tools.
- Professional certifications such as CPSM, CIPS, PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent.
