About the role
The Financial Controller leads the core controllership functions for VCA Animal Hospitals, including accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, and treasury. This role is accountable for maintaining the integrity of financial results, ensuring a strong internal control environment, and serving as a key partner to support business performance and decision-making.
As a senior finance leader within the Mars Veterinary Health ecosystem, this role partners closely with field and support office leadership to ensure financials accurately reflect operations, support growth, and enable strategic priorities. The Controller also plays a critical role in advancing automation, standardization, and finance transformation initiatives.
NOTE: This role requires associates to work out of an MVH North America hub location – Santa Monica, CA
Essential Responsibility/Task:
Controllership & Financial Stewardship
Collaborate with MVH stakeholders to align financial practices, support enterprise-wide initiatives, and ensure consistency in reporting and controls
Lead all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, and accounts payable, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP
Maintain the integrity of financial records and ensure a strong internal control environment to mitigate risk
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes and reporting requirements
Serve as the primary liaison for internal and external audits
Financial Partnership & Business Impact
Partner with support office and field leadership to ensure financial results reflect business operations and support informed decision-making
Provide clear, actionable financial insights, identifying risks and opportunities to improve performance
Collaborate across functions to align financial reporting with operational drivers in a multi-site veterinary environment
Transformation & Continuous Improvement
Lead and support finance transformation initiatives, including shared services and process standardization
Drive adoption of automation and digital solutions to improve efficiency and scalability
Engage internal and external partners to deliver projects within defined scope, timelines, and budgets
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing finance team, including succession planning and capability building
Foster a culture of engagement, accountability, and continuous learning
Contribute to the broader Finance talent agenda as a member of the finance leadership team
Strategic & Capital Support
Provide financial oversight and partnership on capital investments and strategic initiatives
Support long-term financial planning and enterprise growth priorities
Collaborate on cross-market or international initiatives as applicable within Mars Veterinary Health
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or Related Field
Master’s degree
10+ years of progressive experience in accounting, financial reporting, or controllership
Experience in multi-site, healthcare, or service-based organizations strongly preferred
CPA preferred
Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle Financials)
Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel
Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI)
MS Suite
Language Proficiency - English
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
Deep expertise in financial accounting, reporting, and internal control
Strong business acumen with the ability to translate financial data into operational insights
Proven ability to influence and partner with senior leaders across functions
Experience leading transformation, automation, or process improvement initiatives

Additional Information
Compensation is negotiable based on education, experience, and other relevant credentials. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $250,000-$300,000. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
