This is an anticipated Vacancy. The Correctional Sergeant III position is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina, which houses approximately 845 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of offenders is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager.  Ensures that staff is fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of offenders. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required.  Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
