Job Description:
What’s the role?
The Fundamentals team provides power price forecasts ranging from day-ahead to long-term horizons (up to 35 years). This position is for a Short/Medium term analyst covering from day-ahead to 2 years-ahead. It is a large and highly collaborative team, offering strong learning and development opportunities across multiple disciplines. The team combines expertise in power market fundamentals, economics, statistics, machine learning, modelling, weather forecasting, and IT.
We work closely with traders, business developers, deal structurers, and quants to support both trading activities and long-term investment decisions. This provides broad exposure to commercial decision-making and market dynamics.
We also collaborate with gas desks, sharing insights, forecasts, and methodologies to ensure a consistent cross-commodity view.
What you’ll be doing
This role supports trading decisions through the development and delivery of power market analysis and views, based on a deep understanding of key intraday and short-term market drivers, including generation, demand, transmission, and regulatory dynamics.
You will be expected to actively contribute to the identification of trading opportunities through your analysis, translating market insight into actionable trading signals and commercial outcomes. Building credibility with traders through the delivery of timely, high-quality analysis is a key part of the role.
The role combines qualitative market understanding with quantitative modelling, supported by appropriate tools and techniques. Collaboration with peers across Power, Gas, and Emissions is essential to develop a consistent and scalable cross-commodity view.
You will be expected to:
- Deliver and communicate actionable short-term market views, directly influencing trading strategies, positioning, and risk-taking decisions
- Develop a market specialisation in a specific area of the power market, while building a broad understanding of global power market dynamics
- Analyse and interpret key drivers of power prices, including demand, renewable and thermal dispatch, transmission constraints, and regulatory dynamics, to explain price formation and anticipate market movements
- Generate actionable insights by combining stack modelling outputs, market fundamentals, and data analysis to identify trading opportunities and market inefficiencies
- Support and mentor junior analysts, contributing to knowledge sharing and team development
- Monitor regulatory and market design developments that may impact prices
- Collaborate closely with analysts, traders, and gas & emissions teams
What we need from you
- Proven experience (2–4 years) in power market analysis or fundamentals
- Hands-on experience with power stack modelling tools (e.g. EPSI, Plexos) to develop, interpret, and challenge power price forecasts
- Strong understanding of European power markets, including short-term price drivers
- Proficiency in Python and Excel for data analysis and modelling
- Experience working with large and complex datasets, including time series data
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present and defend complex analysis to trading stakeholders, and to engage in constructive challenge on market fundamentals
- Strong understanding of risk/reward dynamics, with the ability to identify and propose trading ideas
- Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative discipline
Desirable skills to possess or develop:
- Knowledge of specific European power markets or regional dynamics
- Understanding of ancillary services and power market optimization
- Familiarity with common modelling pitfalls (e.g. overfitting)
- Familiarity with flow-based market coupling and transmission constraints
- Demonstrated ability to generate or contribute to profitable trading ideas
