For the CEE Structural Lab Assistant position: Ideal candidates would have an interest in structural engineering and the research that supports that field. Specific position requirements include supporting ongoing structural research, developing a working understanding of our DIC and MTS research equipment, developing Standard Operating Procedures for our most regularly used structural research equipment, working to create a more functionable and safe structural research environment, helping to support the laboratory coursework for structural courses, helping to lead tours of the structural lab spaces, and helping to update our inventory of structural research equipment.
For the CEE Environmental Lab Assistant position: Ideal candidates would have an interest in environmental engineering and the research that supports that field. Specific position requirements include supporting ongoing environmental research, developing a working understanding of our ICP-MS and autosampler research equipment, developing Standard Operating Procedures for our most regularly used environmental research equipment, working to create a more functionable and safe environmental research environment, helping to support the laboratory coursework for environmental courses, helping to lead tours of the environmental lab spaces, and helping to update our inventory of environmental research equipment.
The following are examples of the primary duties and expectations. Some of these tasks will require limited heavy lifting and/or may result in getting dirty. To the greatest extent possible, the specific tasks that you will be assigned will be aligned with your skill set and interests. No prior lab experience is necessary, however a desire and willingness to embrace new learning opportunities is strongly desired.
- Lab safety checks/maintaining lab signage.
- Monitor for tidiness, cleanliness, clutter, “unattended” equipment/materials.
- Assist with periodic set-up of experiments.
- Coordination with UVA Environmental Health and Safety (EHS).
- Chemical inventory management.
- Equipment inventory management, disposal, and maintenance/repair.
- Retrieving and distributing ordered items.
- Space management and storage coordination.
- Update and maintain operational manuals or training videos.
- Consolidating tools, equipment, and general lab supplies into a central location.
- Manage the laundering and maintenance of lab coats.
In addition to the job duties and responsibilities outlined above, this position will participate in a structured internship experience through the Internship Placement Program (IPP). If selected, interns must participate in an asynchronous, co-curricular workshop series for students. Through this robust internship experience, students will receive dedicated career support from their supervisor and gain key skills and competencies that align with future job interests. The FWS Internship will look great on your resume and provide the student with impactful stories to share in interviews. TFWS Internships are best suited for students in their 2nd – 4th years.
Compensation: $17.75/hr.
