Your Role and Responsibilities
The System Expert (High Voltage and Medium Voltage Power Distribution & Protection) is responsible for system-level technical solutions related to HV and MV power distribution systems in ABB Process Industries projects. According to the role, the System Expert in addition to project execution, he/she supports sales operations by defining power system architectures, protection concepts, and technical boundary conditions to be sold in such a way that they can be implemented consistently from the start of the project to its completion. This role could be located in Vaasa, Pirkkala or Helsinki.
During project implementation, the System Expert operates as a system-level technical specialist for HV and MV distribution and protection, ensuring that switchgears, protection relays, control systems, and auxiliary systems form a coherent, compliant, and operable overall power distribution system according to as sold scope.
Whenever necessary, the System Expert provides assistance to the organization for tools and system development needs, project organization, feeder factories, suppliers, and the customer in system-level technical issues related to power distribution, protection functionality, testing, and operation.
You will be mainly accountable for:
Act as the system-level technical expert for HV and MV power distribution and protection
Define and validate overall power system architecture, operating philosophy, and key system designs
Define and approve protection concepts and schemes, ensuring selectivity and system availability
Ensure technical integration of switchgear, protection relays, automation, and communication systems
Identify and manage system-level technical risks (e.g. short-circuit levels and protection performance)
Support sales, project execution, and engineering across the full project lifecycle
Guide and align project engineers and protection specialists under a common system philosophy
Review, approve, and execute critical system and protection-related technical decisions
Maintain and develop system-level documentation, expertise, and best practices

Qualifications for the Role
Strong expertise in electrical power engineering for HV and MV power distribution systems
Expert knowledge of protection and control principles for power systems
Experience in protection relay testing, commissioning, and fault analysis
Ability to understand and apply short-circuit calculations and protection selectivity principles
Broad understanding of industrial and utility power systems and applicable standards
Knowledge of and ability to use ABB HV/MV switchgear, protection relays, and substation automation solutions
Good cooperation and communication skills
Extensive knowledge of ABB products and system solutions
Good ability as a public performer
Good command of English
Because most projects are in the Nordic countries, proficiency in Finnish and Swedish is highly beneficial
