Job Description

What will you do

Johnson Controls invites you to join our Field Device Product Development Engineering team as a Technical Project Engineer, contributing to the next generation of HVAC field devices that enable intelligent, efficient buildings. This is a system‑level engineering role, ideal for someone who wants to understand how hardware, firmware, software, and product requirements come together to form a complete solution.

You’ll work across the full product lifecycle—shaping requirements, analyzing system behavior, supporting development and testing, and helping keep engineering activities aligned and moving forward.

This position is 100% on‑site at our new Controls Product Development Center and Lab in Glendale, WI, where you’ll collaborate closely with cross‑disciplinary teams and work hands‑on with real products. Candidates must be commuting distance to Glendale, WI, or able to relocate. Various relocations packages are available.

How will you do it

  • Analyze product and project requirements from a system and product-level perspective

  • Gather, analyze, and report essential project data (requirements, engineering effort estimates, actual work hours, project costs, etc.)

  • Read and modify code as needed to support development activities

  • Perform engineering-level testing on embedded field device products; develop test software, report results, and propose improvements

  • Use JIRA to track engineering tasks, manage workflows, and support project planning and execution

  • Prepare and deliver reports and schedules for engineering development projects

  • Assist in preparing presentations for project plans, strategy, and timeline updates

  • Support Engineering Excellence and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Collaborate with a global engineering team to achieve project objectives

  • Perform other duties and projects assigned

What we look for

Required

  • No sponsorship available — must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field

  • 3–5 years of experience as a software engineer, embedded software engineer, project engineer, or similar technical role supporting complex hardware/software products

  • Experience analyzing product and project requirements from a system‑level or product‑level perspective

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across software, firmware, and hardware interfaces, including investigation of customer‑ or field‑reported issues

  • Hands‑on lab experience with embedded or field devices (debugging boards, flashing firmware, using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and digital multimeters)

  • Experience using JIRA or similar tools for task tracking, issue management, and project coordination

  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams, coordinate across teams, and support project execution and delivery

  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20%

Preferred

  • Experience supporting or troubleshooting HVAC, building automation, or other field‑deployed embedded products (e.g., Metasys or similar platforms)

  • Experience in a hybrid role combining technical execution with project engineering or project management responsibilities

  • Programming experience in Python; familiarity with C/C++ in embedded or device‑level environments

  • Exposure to validation, test engineering, or test automation for embedded or connected products

  • Basic understanding of IoT concepts and how field devices interact with cloud or enterprise systems

  • Experience collaborating with global engineering teams, field support, or customer‑facing stakeholders

  • General understanding of cost, schedule, and business considerations in engineering projects
