About the role

The Special Collections Instruction Assistant is a support position in the Albert & Shirley Small Special Collections Library. The student employee in this position will work closely with the Instruction Librarian/Archivist at Special Collections to prepare for class and group visits to the library. Primary responsibilities include creating request slips for materials and pulling and reshelving materials from the closed stacks for classes. Occasionally, the Instruction Assistant may advise on the selection of materials for classes and assist Special Collections staff in setting up materials.

Position requirements: 

  • Current UVA student eligible for student employment. FWS eligibility preferred.
  • Frequent lifting (up to 40 pounds) of boxes and oversize items  
  • A routine use of ladders to retrieve and reshelve materials   
  • A keen attention to detail  
  • Manual dexterity for careful handling of fragile materials  
  • Ability to work between 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday  
  • Ability to work in an environment that is maintained below 65 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve the collections  
  • Excellent computer and communication skills 

The Instruction Assistant will be trained in the handling of rare materials and in the use of library software. 

Candidates will be asked to submit a resume and a cover letter indicating interest in the position.  

The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. This position requires a criminal background check.   


Hours per week: Up to 20  

Pay rate: $16.71/hour  

Position will start 8/25/2026 and end 5/14/2027.
