PATH is currently seeking a qualified Project Intern for the ADVANCE project, funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). ADVANCE is a partnership between PATH, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), and the Burnet Institute, aiming to advance a portfolio of high‑quality diagnostic tools to support malaria elimination efforts in the Pacific and Southeast Asia regions.

The project focuses on ensuring equitable access to optimal malaria diagnostic and treatment options across genders and populations at risk of exclusion. ADVANCE supports national and regional malaria elimination goals through three core workstreams:

• Research and development of innovative diagnostic tools to support malaria elimination;
• Clinical evaluation of developed diagnostic tools; and
• Availability and Access, which emphasizes the sustainable and localized integration of diagnostics into national procurement and financing systems, as well as the broader diagnostic ecosystem.

In Vietnam, the ADVANCE project supports government agencies and key stakeholders to strengthen systems for the introduction, evaluation, and scale-up of malaria diagnostics, including G6PD point-of-care tests and next-generation malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs).

The Project Intern will work closely with the project team to support the implementation of ADVANCE activities and will report to the Malaria Project Lead.

Description of overall learning objectives and goals for the internship/benefit to the Intern:

The internship aims to provide hands-on experience in global health project implementation with a focus on malaria diagnostics and health systems strengthening. The intern will gain practical exposure to donor-funded project operations, multisectoral partnerships, and evidence-based approaches to improving access to diagnostics. Through engagement with national stakeholders, technical partners, and PATH teams, the intern will develop a strong understanding of how diagnostic tools are developed, evaluated, and integrated into national health systems to support malaria elimination efforts.

Brief description of required skills/experience the intern should possess:

• Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a degree program in public health, global health, health sciences, international development, or a related field
• Strong interest in infectious diseases, diagnostics, and health systems strengthening
• Good written and verbal communication skills in English
• Basic research, analytical, and documentation skills
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment

Skills to be developed and/or expanded during internship:

• Understanding of malaria diagnostics, including G6PD point-of-care tests and next-generation malaria RDTs
• Practical experience in project coordination and implementation of donor-funded health programs
• Stakeholder engagement and coordination with government counterparts, implementing partners, and technical institutions
• Data collection, analysis, and reporting to support program monitoring and learning
• Professional communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills

Proposed activities:

• Support coordination and day-to-day implementation of ADVANCE project activities in Vietnam
• Support data collection, review, and synthesis related to diagnostic introduction, clinical evaluation, or access-related activities
• Assist in preparing project reports, presentations, and briefing materials for internal and external stakeholders
• Conduct desk reviews or background research related to malaria diagnostics, policies, or health systems integration
• Provide administrative and operational support to the project team as needed
