The Ransom Center is an internationally renowned humanities research library and museum at The University of Texas at Austin. Its extensive collections provide unique insight into the creative process of writers and artists, deepening our understanding and appreciation of literature, photography, film, art, and the performing arts. Visitors engage with the Center's collections through research and study, exhibitions, publications, and a rich variety of program offerings including readings, talks, symposia, and film screenings.

The Ransom Center encourages discovery, inspires creativity, and advances understanding of the humanities for a broad audience through the preservation and sharing of its extraordinary collections.

Purpose

Monitor and assist with security of the Harry Ransom Center’s public exhibition space and provide a positive visitor experience. Provide friendly, quality information and orientation to visitors during hours of operation and special events.

Responsibilities

Security:

  • Assist in the security of the Ransom Center by monitoring and protecting the collection, visitors, galleries, and grounds. Provide clear guidance, direction, and information to ensure that all visitors have a positive experience and adhere to museum policies.

  • Follow security procedures to assist in the opening and closing of the galleries.

  • Perform interior patrols of galleries during public hours and maintain order in assigned areas, including monitoring access and egress points of the galleries.

Operations:

  • Actively participate in training programs to improve knowledge of the museum, security best practices, and customer service skills.

  • Document and report observed physical interactions with works of art by visitors.

  • Report any missing, damaged objects, or unusual conditions to supervisor. Report any irregularities pertaining to building operations, safety or fire hazards during patrol of premises.

Customer Service:

  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a courteous and friendly manner.

  • Provide knowledge of museum exhibitions, events, and the surrounding area to visitors.

Safety:

  • Serve as initial responder in the event of an emergency, know evacuation procedures and routes, and contacting a supervisor when appropriate. Act in a calm and decisive manner when assisting in the evacuation of the public and staff from the building, during fire alarms or other emergencies.

Required Qualifications

  • Students must be enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin
  • Strong communication and observation skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Detail‑oriented with strong organizational and time‑management abilities

Salary Range

$16.00 per hour

Working Conditions

  • Required to perform foot patrols of interior exhibition gallery space for periods of up to 13 hours per week.

Work Shift

  • During hours when gallery is open. Gallery hours are currently Tuesday–Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
