Principal Transport Planner

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced Principal Transport Planner to join our KBR Adelaide team to lead and deliver transport planning advisory services across major South Australian Government (DIT), Defence and Commonwealth infrastructure projects.

This role focuses on transport strategy, corridor and network planning, option and feasibility studies, business cases and approvals support to enable complex infrastructure outcomes.

Operating under general direction, you will apply advanced professional judgement, provide technical leadership, and manage multi‑disciplinary inputs to deliver high‑quality outcomes aligned with DIT, Defence and Commonwealth standards. You will contribute to both project delivery and work‑winning activities, and play a key role in mentoring and developing emerging transport planning professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and deliver transport planning projects for SA Government (DIT), Defence and Commonwealth clients

  • Manage and undertake strategic transport studies, feasibility assessments, option evaluations and business cases

  • Provide technical leadership, review and assurance for transport planning outputs

  • Apply independent professional judgement in selecting and adapting transport planning methodologies

  • Coordinate and integrate inputs from multi‑disciplinary teams (roads, rail, ports, aviation, land use, environment)

  • Prepare high‑quality reports, briefings and technical documentation for government and Defence audiences

  • Act as Project Manager or Project Supervisor, managing scope, program, budget, quality and governance

  • Liaise directly with clients, stakeholders and approval authorities to provide informed, trusted advice

  • Support transport planning inputs for Defence infrastructure projects, including access, movement and logistics considerations

  • Contribute to transport approvals processes aligned with SA and Commonwealth investment frameworks

  • Provide mentoring, guidance and technical support to junior and mid‑level planners

  • Support work‑winning through pursuit strategy, tender inputs, proposal development and costings

  • Collaborate across regions to support national infrastructure and Defence opportunities

  • Maintain compliance with quality, safety, security and project governance requirements

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Transport Planning, Urban Planning or equivalent (mandatory)

  • Typically 15+ years’ industry experience with demonstrated senior‑level transport planning capability

  • Currently Chartered or working towards Chartership with Engineers Australia

  • Strong experience delivering transport planning projects for government clients

  • Sound understanding of SA Government infrastructure planning, approvals and investment processes

  • Experience supporting Defence or Commonwealth infrastructure projects (highly regarded)

  • Proven experience managing projects to agreed scope, budget, schedule and quality

  • Demonstrated ability to review, verify and assure transport planning outputs

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including senior client‑facing reporting

  • Experience mentoring and developing professional staff

  • Track record contributing to tenders, proposals and work‑winning activities

  • Previous consultancy or professional services experience (advantage)
