Description of Work

The Accounting Technician position is responsible for processing accounts payable transactions, ensuring accurate and timely vendor payments, maintaining organized financial records, and supporting accounting operations within the NC Department of Adult Correction. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while supporting unit workflow.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to -

• Process accounts payable transactions, including direct and matching vendor invoice payments, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

• Maintain organized and up‑to‑date payment records while reconciling payment data and resolving discrepancies.

• Communicate effectively with vendors and internal staff to address account issues and verify financial information.

• Apply analytical thinking and decision‑making to troubleshoot payment problems, support workflow during staff absences, and operate effectively without direct supervision.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Range is $33,902.00 - $59,327.00 Annually.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Strong knowledge of office procedures, accounting practices, GAAP principles, and applicable mathematics

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proper grammar, proofreading, and professional correspondence.

  • Proven ability to record, analyze, and interpret financial data, review information for compliance, and apply policies and regulations.

  • Demonstrated judgment, discretion, and problem‑solving skills with experience coordinating information, resolving issues, and supporting program operations.

This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule and requires onsite reporting within Raleigh, NC.

About the Division:

The Controller’s Office ensures that all department financial resources are received, disbursed, recorded, and accounted for in accordance with State and Federal laws, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and agency policies. At the agency level, the Controller’s Office oversees the North Carolina Financial System (NCFS) for all financial transactions affecting the department and is accountable to the State Controller for data integrity.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or
