Job Description: Intern Software Developer – Value Added Services (Spits Alkmaar)

Purpose of the role
Support the Value Added Services team in improving and stabilizing a small but business-critical peripheral application within the Spits Alkmaar environment, with a focus on enhancing error handling, usability, and maintainability.

Context and problem statement

Within Spits Alkmaar, a supporting (“edge”) application is used to enable specific operational processes. While the application is functionally in use, it has limitations in usability and supportability.

Currently:

• Error messages are unclear, overly technical, or missing
• Users lack visibility into what went wrong and how to act
• Incident analysis requires manual investigation by IT
• Logging and error handling are inconsistent or insufficient

This results in inefficiencies in operations and an increased dependency on IT for troubleshooting.

Assignment / Responsibilities

You will take ownership of improving this application end-to-end, from analysis to production release.

• Analyze the current application, including functionality, integrations, and error handling
• Identify shortcomings and define improvement areas
• Gather and define functional and technical requirements
• Design a structured approach for improved error handling and logging
• Develop and implement the required enhancements
• Test the solution (functional and technical validation)
• Deploy the improvements to production in alignment with team standards
• Document the solution and hand it over to the team

Desired outcome

A fully implemented and production-ready improvement of the existing application, resulting in:

• Clear, consistent, and user-friendly error messages
• Improved logging and traceability for support and incident analysis
• Reduced time required to diagnose and resolve incidents
• A more robust and maintainable application aligned with operational needs

What you bring

• Experience with software development (e.g. C#, .NET or similar)
• Understanding of application integrations and APIs
• Ability to analyze existing systems and translate findings into improvements
• Structured and solution-oriented mindset
• Strong ownership and ability to deliver end-to-end
• Good communication skills in an operational environment

Working environment

• You will work within the Value Added Services team supporting Spits Alkmaar
• Collaboration with developers, SMEs, and operational stakeholders
• Focus on a pragmatic, results-driven delivery
