About the role
Reporting to a senior member of the QA team, the QA Engineer will be primarily responsible for accessibility testing across Calastone’s client-facing web applications, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1/2.2 (Level AA) standards and delivering an inclusive user experience.
The role combines automated accessibility testing using Playwright with Axe integration, and manual accessibility evaluation using WAVE and Axe Chrome browser extensions. As a secondary focus, the role provides a pathway into broader UI test automation using Playwright — a highly transferable skill that strengthens both the individual’s career and the team’s overall automation capability.
The QA team uses AI-augmented workflows (Claude Code, MCP integrations) to accelerate test design, execution, and defect analysis. You will be expected to adopt these tools as part of your day-to-day work.
Your Responsibilities
Accessibility Testing (Primary Focus)
- Perform manual accessibility audits against WCAG 2.1/2.2 (Level AA) using WAVE and Axe Chrome extensions, covering keyboard navigation, colour contrast, ARIA attributes, focus management, and screen reader compatibility (NVDA).
- Triage and document accessibility defects with WCAG success criteria references and clear remediation guidance for development teams.
- Collaborate with front-end developers and UX designers to identify and resolve accessibility barriers early in the development cycle.
- Contribute to accessibility standards documentation and champion best practices across Calastone's fintech platforms.
- Work with the team to learn and gradually contribute to the existing Playwright + Axe automated accessibility test suites as skills develop.
UI Test Automation (Transferable Skill)
- Candidates with existing Playwright, Selenium, or similar automation experience: contribute to and extend the team's Playwright + Axe automated accessibility suite from day one.
- Candidates developing automation skills: be introduced to the team's existing suite and supported in building Playwright capability on the job.
- Over time, contribute to broader UI test automation including functional and cross-browser testing.
AI-Enhanced QA Practices
- Use AI coding agents (Claude Code) and MCP server integrations to accelerate test creation, defect triage, and impact analysis.
- Contribute to prompt engineering and refinement of QA AI skills.
Collaboration
- Work with Engineering, Product, Operations, and DevOps teams to understand testing needs and priorities.
- Share knowledge and promote best practices across the QA team.
- Partner with developers to identify, document, and resolve defects.
What You’ll Bring
- Practical accessibility testing experience — hands-on auditing of web applications against WCAG 2.1/2.2 (Level AA) using Axe, WAVE, keyboard navigation, and screen readers (NVDA).
- Proficient with Axe Chrome DevTools and WAVE browser extensions for identifying and evaluating accessibility failures.
- Solid understanding of WCAG 2.1/2.2 success criteria and the ability to map defects to specific criteria and remediation steps.
- Strong grasp of QA methodologies, agile processes, and software testing principles.
- Experience testing within financial technology or similar regulated/enterprise web application domains.
- Clear communicator, effective with both technical and business stakeholders in a distributed team.
Desirable
- Accessibility testing certification — IAAP CPACC, IAAP WAS, or equivalent recognised credential. Company will support post-hire certification for the right candidate.
- Deep knowledge of ARIA roles, states, and properties and interaction with assistive technologies (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver).
- Experience auditing single-page or data-heavy web applications of the kind common in financial services portals.
- UI test automation experience using Playwright (preferred), Selenium WebDriver, or Cypress.
- Experience integrating accessibility checks into automated pipelines (e.g. Playwright + Axe, axe-core CI rules).
- Object-oriented programming skills in C# or Java, with exposure to BDD tools (Reqnroll/SpecFlow).
- Familiarity with fintech data formats and messaging (XML, JSON, FIX, SFTP, Swift).
- Knowledge of CI/CD practices with GitHub Actions (YAML).
- Familiarity with MCP (Model Context Protocol) integrations and AI agent workflows.
Person Specification
- Passionate about accessibility and inclusive design — advocates for users with disabilities.
- Committed to quality, continuous improvement, and coding best practices.
- Curious about AI and emerging technologies with a proactive mindset.
- Calm, focused, and effective under pressure with strong analytical skills.
- Collaborative in multidisciplinary, geographically distributed agile teams.
- Takes ownership, follows issues to root cause, and delivers results independently.
- Communicates clearly and confidently, both in writing and verbally.
- Adapts quickly to change and embraces innovation.
