Description of Work
Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This position reports to the District Engineer for the District 2 office in Nash County. Applicant should have knowledge of the principals and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods, techniques and the use and operation of field and office engineering instruments. This position will coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages. This position is required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces.
The successful applicant for this position must possess working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in the construction of roads with limited supervision. Thorough understanding of the Departments Standards and Specifications related to road and structure construction. Ability to document findings and to take corrective actions. Ability to clearly and concisely convey information orally or in writing to individuals and/or groups. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to others. Ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation; establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.
Employee may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and climbing on the substructure and superstructure of bridges. Must be able to work and carry equipment on steep and rough terrain. Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds. Safely work high above ground, safely operate a motor vehicle, be proficient in record keeping, and engineering testing equipment.
**Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09/ $41,206 - $72,113
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision
- Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures
- Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry
- Demonstrated ability to lead co-workers on assigned tasks
- Knowledge of surveying

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.EEO Statement
