Community Work-Study Program

The Community Work-Study Program (CWS) provides federal financial aid eligible students the opportunity to work part-time at nonprofit organizations that serve the public interest.  

Goals of this program include:  

  • Developing interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and placement in local nonprofit, government, or community-based organizations.  

  • Applying skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom.  

  • Enhancing career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership.  

  • Articulating how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits.  

Job Summary

The work-study will support various aspects of our crime prevention and community engagement initiatives. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit operations, community outreach, and public safety programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in criminal justice, public administration, or nonprofit management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning and coordinating crime prevention programs, workshops, and community events.

  • Support public awareness campaigns and outreach activities.

  • Communicate with community partners and help promote Laredo Crime Stoppers programs.

  • Attend community meetings and events as needed.

  • Create and distribute flyers, newsletters, social media posts, and other informational materials.

  • Assist with updating the organization’s website and social media accounts.

  • Answer phone calls, respond to emails, and assist with public inquiries.

  • Enter data and maintain organized and accurate program records.

  • Help track program activities, participation, and outcomes.

  • Conduct research on crime prevention, community safety, and local crime trends.

  • Assist with preparing reports, presentations, and promotional materials.

  • Support Laredo Crime Stoppers staff with other administrative and program-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates, 3 credit hours for graduates).  

  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.  

  • Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.  

  • Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.  

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen with an alien registration number.  

  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work professionally with staff, community partners, and the public.

  • Basic knowledge of crime prevention and community safety.

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content.

  • Ability to organize files, records, data, and program materials.

  • Ability to research information and assist with reports and presentations.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and complete assignments on time.

  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain confidential information.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Bilingual communication skills in English and Spanish are preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.

  • Promptly complete all required training.

  • Input hours worked daily and submit time sheet biweekly.  

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.

  • Reliable transportation.

  • Subject to funding and/or need.

Pay of Rate: $10.00/hour for up to 15 hours weekly
