Job Summary
As a Residential Driver in Wilmington, you will be the face of GFL. You will safely, efficiently, and courteously provide waste removal or recycling services to our local residential customers. This role involves driving side-load and/or rear-load trucks, collecting waste/recyclables on curbside routes, and transporting materials to post-collection facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Drive & Operate: Safely navigate residential routes operating collection trucks, side/rear-loaders, and hydraulic systems.
Load & Compact: Efficiently load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables, using truck compaction equipment properly.
Safety First: Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip safety lane inspections. Report any mechanical issues immediately to supervisors and mechanics.
Route Management: Maintain high quality standards, follow routing efficiencies, and manage an assigned helper when applicable.
Community Face: Exhibit a professional demeanor and excellent customer service while out on the route.
Compliance: Follow all local, state, and federal safety standards, including wearing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Requirements
License: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience OR a certificate from an accredited CDL school.
Safety: Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Truck Mechanics: Basic understanding of CDL components and safety maintenance.
Maneuvering: Ability to safely back up distances of $120\text{ feet}$ or more using mirrors in tight clearance spaces.
Physical Strength: Ability to exert physical force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to $50\text{ pounds}$ repetitively using proper lifting techniques.
Communication: Ability to read maps, follow route sheets, and communicate effectively with supervisors and customers.
Waste Identification: Ability to recognize and flag unacceptable or hazardous waste.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
Active Work: Ability to stand, walk, crouch, and lift up to $25\text{ pounds}$ frequently, and up to $100\text{ pounds}$ occasionally. Driving/sitting accounts for up to 75% of the shift.
Outdoor Environment: Work outdoors 100% of the time, exposed to changing weather conditions (heat, rain, cold) and standard high-traffic road conditions.
