  • Associate degree preferred

Experience / Qualifications

  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).
  • License in Respiratory Therapy preferred
  • American Heart Association BLS Certification for Health Care Providers.
  • Requires recertification every 5 years by retesting. 10 BRPT approved continuing education credits (CECs) per year averaged over 5 years may be used for recertification in place of retesting.

Position Summary

The BRPT Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) will perform artifact-free polysomnography and other related diagnostic tests and data analysis under the general and direct supervision of the Sleep Center Manager.

  • The RPSGT will assist with the orientation and training of new technologists and Certified Polysomnographic Technologists (CPSGT)
  • May include PSG data analysis (scoring PSG), collection and compiling of QA data, and performing patient follow-up tasks.
  • This position requires additional critical thinking skills to allow independent performance and supervision of other technical staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
Attention to detail is critical. The technologist must remain alert and attentive throughout the procedure in order to respond to the patients needs and to perform therapeutic interventions appropriately. Prompt recognition of recording artifacts and clinical events is required to assure patient safety and accurate testing and treatment. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time, as well as stoop, kneel, stand and lift. The technologist must also be able to utilize a computer keyboard and mouse efficiently to perform data analysis and/or polysomnogram (PSG) scoring if designated. Collection of PSG data involves sitting for up to 4 to 5 hours frequently interrupted by patient care. Scoring PSG data involves sitting in front of a computer workstation for 2 to 3 hours per test analyzed. Must be able to move between patient rooms, to ambulate, to position and transfer patients. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, able to push or pull 250 pounds in transporting equipment or patients to an assigned area. Precise hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity is necessary to perform procedures and other direct patient care activities. A physical agility test (PAT) is required for new hires, transfers, and those returning from medical leave. PAT criteria are: Hands/Wrists: Grip dynamometer with force of greater than 10 lbs. for 10 seconds. Pinch thumb and forefinger with force of greater than 2 pounds for 10 seconds. Elbows: Rotate wrist left to right holding a 10 lb. weight. Shoulders: Sustain shoulder flexion while holding a 10 lb. weight. Legs: Squat and hold for 30 seconds, kneel on single knee using right or left knee. Push a stationary loaded cart (250 lbs.) with a pushing force of 40 lbs. Pull same cart with force of 40 lbs. Carrying: Carry a 20 lb. weight for a distance of 25 feet. Lifting: Lift floor to table a 50 lb. weight, lift 20 lbs. above shoulder height.
Threshold Requirements
These threshold requirements are required and completed yearly basis, Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation, TB/PPD, Surveillance Program.
