About the role
The Mission
Boston Dynamics is scaling the Atlas humanoid fleet to push the limits of generalist robotics. As the Controls Reliability Manager, you will lead a team of engineers bridging the gap between high-volume field operations and core R&D. Serving as a Technical Force Multiplier, you will build the diagnostic infrastructure, automated health checks, and escalation paths that enable our organization to scale reliably and move faster.
What You’ll Do
Team Leadership: Manage and mentor junior engineers specializing in Controls and Hardware Reliability.
Hands-on Contribution: Maintain high technical engagement by owning projects such as C++ and Python-based automated testing and debugging utilities.
Resource Orchestration: Manage team priorities and coverage, balancing urgent field escalations with long-term diagnostic infrastructure goals.
Diagnostic Roadmap: Identify manual troubleshooting tasks for automation and drive the development of supporting software tools.
Process Standardization: Convert technical insights into scalable "Diagnostic Playbooks" to empower field teams to resolve known issues independently.
Operations Partnership: Serve as the primary technical contact for Fleet Operations, ensuring seamless failure handoffs and alignment on fleet readiness.
R&D Feedback Loop: Synthesize failure trends into actionable data for senior R&D engineers to influence future hardware and software designs.
Who You Are
Player-Coach: Experienced in managing technical staff in high-pressure R&D or SRE environments while remaining adept at deep-dive log analysis.
Technical Expert: Proficient in C++, Python, and electromechanical systems, including brushless DC motors, sensors, and real-time software stacks.
Systems Thinker: Focused on creating order through scalable diagnostic architectures rather than temporary, one-off fixes.
Communicator: Skilled at translating technical "noise" into high-signal feedback for leadership and cross-functional partners.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, ME/EE, Computer Science, or a related field.
8+ years of professional experience in robotics, hardware reliability, or technical R&D; 2+ years in a leadership role.
Proven experience debugging complex electromechanical hardware in a lab or field environment.
Proficiency in C++ and Python for system analysis and tool development.
Ability to work onsite at our Waltham facility for direct hardware interaction and team mentorship.
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
The base pay range for this position is between $155,000 to $200,000 annually.
