Description

We are seeking an entrepreneurial Underwriter to join our growing FAIRCO healthcare professional liability team in Arlington, VA writing in the mental healthcare vertical across both Admitted and Excess & Surplus lines (E&S) platforms. FAIRCO is a subsidiary of TransRe holdings, a Berkshire Hathaway Company.

This role offers a unique opportunity to manage a diverse portfolio of risks and build expertise in an evolving, highly specialized, and underserved segment of the healthcare market. The underwriter will work alongside experienced healthcare liability professionals and management to influence underwriting strategy and leverage their E&S underwriting experience to underwrite complex accounts, develop broker relationships, and contribute directly to profitable growth in this segment. The ideal candidate combines the underwriting discipline to adapt and underwrite across both platforms applying market insight and underwriting expertise to shape the portfolio. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Underwriting new and renewal opportunities in accordance with company underwriting guidelines, ensuring sound risk selection and coverage structures enabling profitable growth in the mental healthcare vertical across Admitted and E&S platforms.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with retail and wholesale brokers to increase submission flow and deliver appropriate insurance solutions for risks.
  • Actively marketing FAIRCO’s healthcare products and capabilities through marketing efforts at broker and client meetings, industry exhibits and events, and targeted business development efforts.
  • Partnering with Claims, Risk Management, Actuarial, and Senior Leadership teams to evaluate and develop insurance solutions, emerging risks, and market opportunities.
  • Managing portfolio performance within mental health segments and identifying opportunities for growth
  • Monitoring MPL market trends and jurisdictional developments to maintain competitive positioning, create new business opportunities, and strengthen FAIRCO’s leadership in the market.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial liability underwriting experience in the Excess & Surplus (E&S) market.
  • Experience building and maintaining broker and wholesale relationships within the healthcare professional liability, medical professional liability, or a related specialty lines market
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation and communication skills.
  • RPLU, or other industry designations, a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% for industry conferences, broker, and client engagement.

Work Schedule

TransRe is supportive of an agile work schedule, which may differ based on individual roles, your local office’s practices and preferences, marketplace trends, and TransRe’s business objectives. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with 4 days in the office per week, and 1 day remote.
