About the role
The Red Hat Hummingbird team is looking for a Software Engineer in Brno, Czech Republic. In this role, you will help build and maintain the systems that produce hundreds of container image deliverables from open source software. You'll work across the full lifecycle of those images -- from packaging upstream code, to building and testing containers, to shipping reliable artifacts that customers depend on.
Hummingbird is Red Hat's effort to deliver open source projects as compact, secure container images with as few CVEs as possible. We are an agentic-first team -- you'll accomplish much of your work by developing, directing, and refining AI agents that automate engineering tasks at scale. Prior AI agent experience is not required, but you should be excited to work this way and comfortable adapting as the tooling evolves. You'll contribute to tooling, automation, and processes that make this possible at scale, and you'll do it in the open alongside the broader open source community.
What you will do
Build, maintain, and improve the automated pipelines that produce RPM packages and container images from open source components
Develop and run test suites that validate our images for enterprise-grade stability and security compliance
Collaborate with upstream communities and peer teams across Red Hat to integrate new software components and resolve issues
Identify and implement improvements to our build and release tooling, reducing manual effort and improving throughput
Participate in a distributed Agile Scrum team, contributing to planning, reviews, and retrospectives
What you will bring
Experience with scripting languages such as Python or Bash
Linux proficiency: comfort using, assembling, and deploying Linux distributions (Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, or similar)
1+ year(s) of professional experience building and managing containers (Podman, Docker, Containerfiles)
Ability to work effectively with minimal day-to-day supervision as part of a geographically distributed team
Good written and verbal communication skills in English
The following are considered a plus
Experience with Linux distribution build systems (RPM, Mock, rpmbuild, spec files)
Experience with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab Pipelines, Tekton, or Kubernetes-based workflows
Experience with agentic AI and automation workflows
Familiarity with Go or Rust
