This posting is for the vacant Engineering Specialist I in Western Field Operations groups in the Structures Management Unit.

This position requires moderate to advanced understanding of drafting techniques for highway related structures including design, rehabilitation, preservation, or critical repair projects.

Regular duties may include:

•Preparing contract plans for Preservation, Rehabilitation, and Repair (PRR) and Emergency repairs for Existing Structures. This involves an ability to read and understand old designs and plans, structure inspection reports, and field scoping notes to best present information in plans form. Requires some field work in order to determine extent of damage.
•Prepare contract plans for new or replacement structures. This involves the layout and plan preparation of bridges, culverts and other structures in accordance with AASHTO Specifications and the Structures Management Unit Design Manual, policies and procedures. This includes structures on geometrically complex alignments and technically complex design requirements such as continuous or curved steel girders, moveable bridge components, trusses and connections. May require verbal or written communication with the engineer of record to determine specific design requirements.
•Load rating existing structures. This involves studying bridge inspection reports and evaluating the structural condition of all bridges, culverts and pipes on the state highway system. You will utilize advanced software to determine the safe load carrying capacities of all structural members and connections as well as evaluating maintenance proposals from Division personnel for upgrades and repairs to highway structures in their efforts to improve load ratings.
•Communicate with internal and external partners. This includes written and verbal communication of moderately complex engineering concepts with colleagues to ensure work can be completed in a timely and organized manner. Communication with other NCDOT units and Division personnel may also be necessary to ensure they and we have needed information to complete tasks and deliver projects.

Knowledge and understanding of engineering concepts and practices related to bridge repair, preservation, rehabilitation, and replacement projects. Ability to identify and plan for resources. Ability to explain/write related facts in a clear, concise and organized manner to individuals and groups. Ability to listen to and respond appropriately to others. Ability to climb bridge structures and scaffolds. Ability to keep accurate notes and records. Knowledge and ability in drafting and the use of a computer.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC13 $50,088 -$87,654

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience drafting and checking moderately complex highway structure plans for new construction for completeness, accuracy, and clarity
  • Experience drafting and checking moderately complex highway structure plans for preservation, rehabilitation, and repair for completeness, accuracy, and clarity
  • Experience completing and checking final computations and quantities for highway structure plans.
  • Working knowledge of software including CADD and MS Office
  • Experience participating in a collaborative manner during the completion of tasks or assignments

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
