The team
The Route Engineering team develops next-generation technologies that change how millions of consumers see, share, and discover the world's most innovative brands and products. Route Engineers have backgrounds in distributed systems design and development, large-scale data storage and processing systems, UI design, mobile, and much more — but what unites this talented team is a passion for the Route mission to connect the world's commerce through our suite of transformational products.
The opportunity
Route is looking for an AI Automation Engineer to design and build internal AI-powered workflows that drive significant efficiency gains across Route. This role sits at the forefront of applied AI, leveraging LLMs to create agentic systems that combine code, tools, and autonomous decision-making to automate complex, time-intensive processes. You’ll play a key role in redefining how work gets done by turning manual, multi-hour tasks into scalable, intelligent workflows that accelerate productivity across the organization.
What you’ll do
- Design, build, and deploy AI-powered workflows and agentic systems that automate complex, multi-step internal processes
- Identify high-impact opportunities for automation by partnering cross-functionally with teams across the organization
- Develop scripts, integrations, and system-to-system connections that enable seamless data flow and task execution
- Leverage LLMs and emerging AI tooling to create intelligent, scalable solutions that reduce manual work and increase efficiency
- Own projects end-to-end from discovery and design through implementation, testing, and iteration
- Deliver high-quality, production-ready code with the same rigor and standards as the broader engineering team
- Collaborate with Product, Data, and Engineering partners to prioritize, build, and continuously improve solutions
- Contribute to a culture of innovation, transparency, and direct feedback while exploring new ways AI can transform how we work
What we’re looking for
- Hands-on experience working with LLMs and AI tooling to build workflows, automations, or intelligent systems
- Experience developing agentic or multi-agent systems, including orchestrating tools, APIs, and decision logic
- Proven ability to identify inefficiencies and translate them into automated, scalable AI-driven solutions
- 5+ years of software engineering experience with a strong foundation in computer science fundamentals
- Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java, JavaScript)
- Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable, production-grade systems and services
- Strong experience with APIs, system integrations, and data flow across distributed systems (e.g., REST, event-driven architectures)
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and building highly available, reliable systems
- Comfortable working cross-functionally and partnering with non-technical stakeholders to understand problems and deliver impact
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
