Who we’re looking for

Toyota’s North American Production Engineering Battery department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Principal Engineer to work in the Battery Seibi and Controls group.

The responsibility of this role is to assure North American machine standards are integrated into all TBMNC Battery Production Equipment.  Additionally, this role will play a vital part in setting machine specifications and standardization for global platforms.  This position will establish key initiatives to meet business targets as well as strengthen Battery PE overall through Hoshin and cross-functional activities.

The person in this role will support the NA PE Battery Department's objective to execute safe and standardized equipment through the Start of Production (SOP) across all TBMNC Battery platforms.

Additionally, the successful candidate must be effective at identifying and removing barriers that hinder progress of the Production Engineering department while integrating training opportunities that will allow the department to become stronger and sounder in battery manufacturing.  As a subject matter expert, the successful candidate must decide, manage, and allocate work priorities to dedicated groups while developing and executing activity plans for said priorities and report their status to senior manager and above.     

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead and participate in development activities for overall NA Battery PE Seibi and Controls to achieve process standardization.  This will include developing, monitoring, and continuously improving systems to support the department’s mission and vision (i.e. shikumi, Job Safety Analysis, Denwacho, Safety Checks, technical training, etc.).

  • Support the NAMC to pursue continuous improvement and cost competitiveness activities through innovation and kaizen.

  • Lead and resolve technical and organizational issues including external vendors, suppliers, and customers while still achieving overall project KPI’s at the location.

  • Provide technical authority in controls reliability, network, data, andon, and machine safety 

  • Analyze machine risk assessments, safety logic, and validation results to set direction for shop equipment controls.

  • Lead NA verification and validation processes including 3rd-party oversight and implementation of recommended countermeasures 

  • Confirm equipment adherence to standards, lifecycle gates, and governance models 

  • Calculate and analyze Sistema for component performance levels and recommend improved equipment design and sustainability 

  • Create and/or standardize equipment specifications for efficient integration to production.  

  • Develop machine standards based on North American specifications 

  • Mentor current and new department members to assure conformance to Toyota work standards and provide task based OJD technical instruction and training 

  • Review and revise machine electrical schematics using CAD based software 

  • Participate and input to building UTT and Arc Flash countermeasure and results through analysis of “as built” prints and feedback to EZ Power models.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical field or 5+ years of experience as a Toyota team member in a Machine Seibi or Controls Engineering role

  • Toyota experience (team member and/or contract experience applicable)

  • Experience in Toyota equipment specification planning and implementation for capital projects, including equipment trial readiness

  • Experience with Controls Reliability and Safety Circuit Analysis relative to North American and Toyota Standards

  • Experience in a role leading a cross-functional problem-solving team to gain consensus on a result impacting production equipment

  • Ability to work weekend and shutdown periods as needed including business travel, both domestic and international, up to 50% at peak times with an average of 25%

Added bonus if you have

  • Battery Manufacturing Equipment experience

  • Experience working with shop layout efficiency improvement activities utilizing Material Information Flow Chart (MIFC)

  • OSHA 10 certified

  • Technical Inspection Associations (TUV) certification

  • Functional Safety Engineering and/or Controls reliability experience

  • Experience with multiple PLC platforms including, but not limited to: Toyopuc, Omron, Keyence, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, SICK, Siemens, Yaskawa, GSWorks, etc.
