This posting is for an Engineering Technician III position in the Winston-Salem Construction #2 Unit. This position will serve as an advanced level technician by completing technical engineering work and supporting other engineers. Positions in this classification perform technical duties supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction, materials testing, design, surveys, and/or program/regulatory compliance. Work functions may include: inspection for compliance and/or code; collection and analysis of field data; testing of materials; review, modification and/or design of plans; analysis of engineering related data, products, and/or functions. Work may include functioning in a full supervisory role for direct reports including performing/supervising several administrative functions or supervision of a separate function of considerable complexity. This position may serve as survey crew leader serve as survey crew leader, independently direct activities of other survey crew members in collecting field data on complex surveys. POS# 60021046
This position must apply the Department’s safety program to all operations. The ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards present on construction sites including traffic, heights, weather extremes, and traversing rough/uneven terrain is needed. May be subject to emergency situations and snow and ice removal. This position must be able to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. The position will need to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. This position must have proficiency using computers and electronic tablets in the record keeping of field data. A general knowledge of surveying methods and procedures is preferred. The position must be able to perform moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing. Safety toe shoes required. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle preferred.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC11 / $45,431 - $79,504
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision
- Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
- Experience in applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
- Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
