DUTIES:

Under general directive supervision on a day, fixed or modified shift schedule, operates pole hauling equipment, all types of earth boring machines, track and wheel mounted trenching machines, loaders,, bulldozers, excavators, and other similar equipment in an about substations, power plants and other Company and customer property; works with a helper or others in completing work assignments, performing such duties as:

1.      Driving truck or tractor with special trailer used for hauling oversize and overweight equipment such as poles, transformers, bulldozers,, excavators, cranes, etc. requiring special permits.

2.      Operating all types of earth boring machines used for installing wood and metal poles, transmission tower foundations and caissons.  Assisting in setting all sizes of poles, transformers and material near energized conductors according to safety requirements of the Company.

3.      Being responsible for the stock of materials and tools being hauled on the truck or equipment, and in addition, for the materials and tools normally carried

4.      Maintaining equipment in good operating condition by making minor repairs, applying "good housekeeping" practices, lubricating and checking all fluid levels and reporting any need for major repairs or adjustments.

5.      Directing and instructing employees assigned as helpers in their work, in safety, and on standard practices and procedures as a regular duty.

6.      Operating excavators used for installing transmission tower foundations and other underground facilities.

7.      Operating backhoes, loaders, bulldozers, trenchers and associated equipment.

8.      Excavating and grading to specific requirements.

9.      Installing URD type streetlighting including cable, ducts, fixtures, photo cells and wiring according to construction drawings.

10. Placing URD type cables, pedestals, transformer pads and transformers according to job construction drawings and including direct buried cable of all sizes both primary and secondary, taping and sealing of ends.

11.       Installing ground rods for substations and URD systems, connections for grounding of transformers and communication equipment.

12.       Placing communication cable of all sizes and installing ducts and pedestals according to construction drawing for joint line use.

13.       Maintaining records of work performed, materials and equipment installed and allocations of labor hours to standard work operations.

14.       Contacting customers as to work being performed on their property.

15.       Performing other similar or less skilled work as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet the Company's requirements as to GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS; and, in addition:

1.      Must have had at least one (1) year's experience as a Senior Constructor, Groundman Driver "A", or Helper Driver "A", or one and one-half (1-1/2) year's experience as a Mechanic Underground.

2.      Must have sufficient mechanical ability and show an aptitude for making minor adjustments, repairs and maintenance on equipment operated to maintain efficient operation.

3.      Must be able to read construction drawings and use a transit (for leveling purposes) for determining depth and size of trenches or holes and grade elevations.

4.      Must show good judgment concerning clearance from overhead wires and obstructions and underground cables, gas, water, and other lines.

5.      Must have the necessary valid driver's license and pass the P. U. C. 0. physical exam as required and pass the examination for entrance into the grade of Equipment Operator, including questions or problems on the following:

a.         Understanding of the Traffic Safety Code, and a working knowledge of the equipment and highway locations.

b.         Sufficient knowledge of the equipment and auxiliaries for operation in an efficient and safe manner.

6.      Must have a knowledge of soil conditions as to stability and digging conditions.

7.      Must be able to use a telephone and mobile radio to receive and transmit instructions pertaining to all work operations.

8.      Must be able to make a clear and legible written record of all operations.

Specific Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a CDL license.

  • Due to Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) imposed regulations, the body weight limitation is imposed at 285 lbs. or less.

  • Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility.
