The U.S. Litigation & Government Investigations team plays a critical role in protecting the company through high‑stakes litigation, investigations, and strategic dispute resolution.
HP seeks an experienced litigation attorney to join the U.S. Litigation & Government Investigations team as Litigation Counsel. Litigation Counsel manages complex, high‑stakes litigation, government investigations, and non‑litigation disputes for the company and serves as a trusted legal advisor to senior business and legal stakeholders. This role requires significant experience in complex commercial litigation, class actions, and IP litigation.
This is a senior, hands‑on individual contributor role for an attorney who actively drives litigation and investigations strategy and execution, and partners closely with the business on risk and outcomes.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Lead and manage complex litigation matters, including commercial disputes, consumer and other class actions, and IP litigation, from pre‑litigation strategy through resolution.
Serve as matter lead, with responsibility for developing and executing litigation and investigations strategy, assessing risk, setting settlement posture, and driving outcomes.
Take a hands‑on approach to litigation and investigations, including direct involvement in pleadings, motion strategy, discovery planning, and case development.
Lead and direct responses to government inquiries, investigations, and enforcement actions, setting strategy, managing risk, and coordinating execution across internal stakeholders and outside counsel.
Serve as delegated legal authority for outside counsel, driving selection, case strategy, staffing models, budgets, and performance to ensure alignment with HP’s litigation objectives.
Provide clear, decisive legal counsel to senior stakeholders on litigation and investigations risk, exposure, and strategic options, informed by business priorities and enterprise risk considerations.
Own accountability for SEC disclosures and loss contingency assessments for assigned matters, partnering closely with finance to ensure accurate, timely, and defensible reporting.
Proactively identify legal and regulatory developments, emerging risks, and litigation trends, and translate them into actionable guidance for business leaders.
Contribute to portfolio‑level initiatives focused on litigation risk management, process improvement, and outside counsel optimization.
Act as a thought leader by sharing subject‑matter expertise and exerting influence across the organization and, as appropriate, externally.
Education & Experience
Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active bar membership meeting local licensing requirements.
Demonstrated ability to independently lead complex, high‑stakes litigation matters.
Deep experience across complex litigation, including Commercial litigation, consumer and other class actions, and IP litigation, with a strong preference for experience in patent litigation
A combination of a top‑tier law firm and in‑house litigation experience is preferred.
First‑chair or second‑chair trial experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
Demonstrated ability to independently manage high‑stakes litigation and government investigations and exercise sound legal judgment.
Strong experience managing outside counsel and controlling litigation strategy and costs.
Excellent written and oral advocacy skills.
Ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly to non‑legal stakeholders.
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously.
Comfort working closely with finance and business teams on risk assessment, accruals, and settlement valuation.
Working familiarity with AI‑enabled legal tools, including the ability to devise, create, and implement appropriate AI‑supported workflows to support litigation strategy, discovery, and case management, with appropriate oversight and consistent with company policies and professional responsibility obligations.
The pay range for this role is $165,450 to $259,750 USD annually with additional opportunities for pay in the form of bonus and/or equity (applies to United States of America candidates only). Pay varies by work location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
