Description of Work

Sergeant I at Randolph Correctional Center, a minimum custody facility that houses 254 adult male offenders.  Supervise subordinate Correctional Officers by assigning staff to a particular area or post. Sergeants oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Sergeants arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. They may at times be the highest-ranking custody staff on the grounds or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Positions report to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or Correctional Assistant Warden I. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ensuring staff are fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed.

  • Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergency situations.

  • Responding to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and transporting offenders.

  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living quarters and work areas for contraband.

  • Investigating and acting appropriately regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.

  • Preparing and reviewing a variety of reports, completing annual performance evaluations, and assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.

  • Performing other related duties, as required.

This is a full-time position working rotating shifts with State Benefits

The salary grade for this position is NC07 Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408. State employees are encouraged to apply for position of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Randolph Correctional Center:

Randolph Correctional Center is in Asheboro, NC and houses up to 254 minimum custody male offenders.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
