What You’ll Work On 

The primary functions of the Analytical Chemist III, Project Lead is the coordination of analytical work which includes conducting, planning and timing of all
test assays to assure that accurate, precise, and timely results are produced in compliance with plant procedures, laboratory methods and Division policies.

  • Responsible for providing effective support to the Analytical Lab and Plant to establish an efficient and proactive laboratory setting for quality assurance testing to take place.
  • Responsible for ensuring the highest quality results while operating within the constraints of the manufacturing schedule and safety guidelines.
  • Will develop positive relations with Analysts, Operators, and Management from other departments that interact with the laboratory. Responsible for providing timely feedback to respective management as to the status of their area of responsibility.
  • Responsible for coordination of analytical work, generating appropriate documentation for batch calculations, corrections and optimizations, coordination of housekeeping responsibilities, having a good understanding of the manufacturing process systems to assist in decisions made concerning products, assisting in investigations into testing problems as required under the Laboratory Investigation Policy.
  • Will recognize method procedure problems, out-of-specification conditions, report them to the Supervisor, and initiate investigation into cause of the quality concern.
  • Must have the ability to recognize any threats to product quality through review of procedures, methods, LIMS, and work orders detecting and correcting batch related testing or documentation errors. Will be able to assist in troubleshooting all test problems.
  • Responsible for assisting chemists in troubleshooting of analytical equipment and test methods, keeping documentation up to date, and coordinating shift’s training on all laboratory procedures, documentation, maintenance, safety, maintain the effectiveness of the laboratory, and assure their work and the work of the Analysts is in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for identifying and solving immediate problems in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Ensures compliance with GMP’s and internal/external policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations.
  • Adjusts labor resources to cover for vacations, meetings, overtime and sick time.
  • Organizes and monitors the labor resources to match the day’s workload.
  • Communicates meetings and general information to everyone working in the department.
  • Directs the crew’s work temporarily when supervisor is not available.
  • Observes all safety rules/regulations, reporting incidents, near misses, and chemical spills to the Supervisor immediately and oversees safety related aspects of the work environment. Will wear all required personal protective equipment, participate in the Plant Environmental Health and Safety Programs, and forward any opportunities for improvement to management.
  • Uses computer programs for spreadsheets and word processing.
  • Responsible for maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies related to the analytical laboratory.
  • Responsible for training new team leaders and analysts on laboratory operations which includes methods, procedures, documentation, maintenance, and safety.
  • Errors made in documentation or adherence to proper lab/plant/division/corporate procedures could result in a Corporate compliance observation, in a FDA product recall, batch destruct or even a serious health risk. An error in transcription or substitution in numerical data entry may not be caught and could cause an incorrect batch adjustment, and possible release to market with an out-of-specification result.
  • Instrument calibration not being followed scrupulously can also result in erroneous data being entered in and not being caught until after the batch has been filled. This can cause additional testing and scrutiny, possibly resulting in a delay of the batch to market or possible batch destruct, which adds substantial costs to the manufacture of the product.

Accountable for ensuring compliance with applicable FDA (GMP), USDA, OSHA and Abbott regulations, policies, procedures or guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED
  • 1+ year of college chemistry with appropriate labs or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions, recognize signs, follow written directions, prepare reports, delegate work and use knowledge of chemistry and processing systems acquired through formal education and experience with minimal assistance from supervisor.
  • Mathematics knowledge would include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, proportions, and basic keyboard skills, computer skills and statistical comprehension is desirable.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 25 lbs. in addition to normal laboratory work.
  • Identify and solve immediate problems in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Ability to assist in troubleshooting all test problems.
  • This individual will recognize and report method procedure problems; recognize out-of-specification conditions, report them and initiate investigation into cause of quality concern.
  • Ability to recognize any threats to product quality through review of procedures, methods and work order is required. Detecting and correcting batch related testing or documentation errors is required.
  • Must have a good understanding of the manufacturing process systems to assist in decisions made concerning products.
  • Ability to work and function well in a team environment
  • A scientific aptitude, along with such skills as coordinating, delegating, effective follow up and attention to detail are vital to this position for the operation of the analytical laboratory. The effects of substandard work in this type of environment can have serious implications to product quality and plant productivity.

The base pay for this position is

$29.55 – $59.05/hour
