Description of Work

This posting is for a Transportation Worker II performing work primarily associated with the sign crew for the NCDOT Robeson County Traffic Services Unit. The work assignment of this position is work related to maintenance (repair & replace) and installation of ground mounted signs included: TODS, Adopt-A-Highway signs. Other work duties include but are not limited to assisting with the paint crew when needed. The employee will operate and maintain a variety of small hand and power tools; serve as a sign erector; haul paint supplies and flag traffic. The employee must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other departments, and the public. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with various people and work in outside environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round. Employee will be subject to emergency callback for detour and inclement weather (Snow and Ice Removal).

Additional Expectations:
Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC05 - $33,902 - $59,327

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in the installation of roadway signs.
  • Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures
  • Experience in Basic Incident Response
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B equipment (paint truck, pre-line paint machine, asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device)

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
