Description of Work
Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This position is located in the Fayetteville Traffic Services Unit. The chosen candidate will perform a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventative maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features, including the installation of ground-mounted signs and the use of paint and thermoplastic pavement markings.
The candidate must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew members, other departments, and the public. They must also be able to communicate effectively with various people. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions, and the candidate must be able to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callbacks and scheduled night work during adverse weather conditions or other extreme circumstances and will perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Additional Expectations:
Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class B Commercial Driver’s License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC08 - $39,244 - $68,679
Management prefers applicants with the following:
Experience with MUTCD Standards and Roadway Specifications in laying out traffic control signage, including Regulatory, Warning and Horizontal Alignment with Speed Advisories.
Experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control safety devices which include highway signs, pavement markings, traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices
Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practice.
Experience is supervising a Sign Installation and Maintenance Crew
Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, Tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and (6) six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
