Job Description

Job Description

At Zendesk, we believe great products are built by great people. We value curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn. We care deeply about both the customer experience and the quality of the code we write. We work in an agile environment, value test-driven development, and release frequently. We believe in pragmatism over dogma, and we all share responsibility for the success of our products.

The Voice team is looking for a motivated Associate Software Engineer to help improve and grow our Zendesk Voice products. Voice is a real-time application that needs to be robust, scalable, and maintainable. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers in a supportive team environment, learning how to deliver high-quality software that meets our customers’ needs.

What you'll do

  • Work closely with a small, collaborative team to deliver value to customers.

  • Take part in the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.

  • Learn and contribute to our engineering practices, including TDD, pairing, peer code review, design review, and continuous deployment.

  • Investigate bugs and issues with support from your team, helping to identify root causes and put tests in place to prevent regressions.

  • Build confidence working across both product features and technical improvements such as refactoring, debugging, and performance work.

  • Learn how to write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code in a production environment.

What you'll bring

  • Up to 2 years of software engineering experience, internship experience, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Some exposure to object-oriented programming, coding best practices, and basic design principles.

  • Familiarity with at least part of our stack, such as Ruby/RailsJavaScript, or React.

  • An interest in agile ways of working, testing, and continuous improvement.

  • A team-focused mindset and a willingness to learn from feedback.

  • Good communication skills — you can explain your ideas clearly and listen well to others.

  • Curiosity, initiative, and the motivation to solve problems and grow your skills.

We don’t expect you to know everything. If you’re excited about the role and feel you can grow into it, we’d love to hear from you.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to VoIP, telecoms, or real-time systems.

  • Experience with testing tools such as RSpec or Selenium.

  • Familiarity with cloud, distributed systems, or event-driven architectures.

Tech stack & tools

Our backend is built with Ruby on Rails and our frontend uses React JS (Redux). We work with MySQL, Redis, and Kafka for event processing. For testing, we use Ruby, Selenium WebDriver, and RSpec.

Our infrastructure runs on Kubernetes, and our delivery pipeline relies heavily on GitHub and GitHub Actions. Once deployed, we monitor using Datadog.

We collaborate using Slack, Zoom, Google Docs, JIRA, and Confluence. We also use Claude and other tools to help us work smarter.
