Description of Work

This position is located at Roanoke River Correctional Institution with a duty assignment to the medium custody facility. This position provides direct supervision for a Correctional Lieutenant II. Employee in this class serves as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility for the assigned shift.

Key Duties Include:
Position will conduct shift line-up, make post assignments, inspect all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post, and ensure that all assigned equipment is operationally ready. This position will complete, review, and maintain employees’ time, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms. Position will provide daily inspections of the facility to include offender living areas and medical and kitchen areas to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly. Position will identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training to subordinate staff. This position will supervise daily offender counts for accuracy, scheduling transportation and transfers of offenders, conduct searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and respond to emergency situations as needed. Position will also conduct internal investigations and will serve as an Investigator completing OSI investigations, develop operational, emergency plans, post orders and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures of discipline and rehabilitation of inmates confined to a correctional facility or institution. Thorough knowledge of principles of administration involved in various functional activities in a correctional facility or institution. Thorough knowledge of the use and maintenance of firearms. Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of subordinate employees. Ability to think clearly and act quickly and efficiently in an emergency. Ability to prepare, review, and follow oral and written instructions.

Salary Range: $45,431 - $79,504

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
