About the Role

Elsevier is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Publisher to manage a portfolio of journals in the field of Materials Science. This position sits within the Materials Science team, part of the Physical Sciences group. In this role, you will support the maintenance and development of a defined list of Materials Science journals. The ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of the scientific landscape, along with strong organizational and communication skills.

Responsibilities

Portfolio Management and Development

  • Develop the portfolio strategy in collaboration with external editorial teams and society partners; ensure alignment with department and broader organizational strategies.

  • Work with editors, authors, editorial boards, reviewers, and the wider academic community to ensure a steady flow of relevant, high-quality manuscripts in Materials Science.

  • Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors and learned societies.

  • Proactively maintain the existing portfolio, reflecting developments in the external marketplace.

  • Achieve portfolio objectives related to content growth, market share, editorial speed, and satisfaction of authors and editors.

  • Manage the editorial fees budget and contribute to pricing processes.

Relationship Management and Networking

  • Establish and maintain excellent contacts with key external stakeholders (editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership, and industry) to understand their needs and ongoing market developments in Materials Science.

  • Build and maintain strong internal relationships across the company (editing, production, publishing, marketing, and technology teams) to coordinate activities relevant to the portfolio’s needs.

Business Development

  • Identify market needs and opportunities in Materials Science.

  • Develop, and where feasible acquire, new products and services, including society journals and conferences related to Materials Science.

Requirements

  • Strong networking and collaboration abilities.

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the publishing landscape.

  • Experience in data gathering, analysis, and presentation.

  • Understanding of the scientific research ecosystem, particularly in Materials Science.

  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.

Educational level and experience

  • University degree – essential.

  • Minimum of 3 years of journal publishing experience or equivalent relevant industry experience in Materials Science – desirable.

  • Fluent English – essential.
