The Lead Mechanical Engineer II leads investigations related to customer problems and drives to root cause, improves existing system designs and processes, and designs/develops/documents new products. This role will offer the opportunity for engineers to refine their technical knowledge on a variety of tools for design, simulation, reliability, and tolerance analysis as well improve their ability to work cross functionality across the entire Cepheid business.
This position is part of the Mechanical Engineering team in the Hardware Engineering organization located in Bengaluru, IDC, India and will be an on-site role.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Define, design, develop, and verify next generation instruments. Continuously document progress during concept, technical feasibility, design & development and verification phases of the product development cycle.
- Design and develop complex electro/optical/thermal mechanical parts and assemblies with careful consideration for DFM, reliability, cost, and human factors.
- Problem-solve sophisticated engineering issues, conduct empirical studies (writing and executing test protocols), analyze data, evaluate and communicate results and findings.
- Write and release Design Change Orders (DCOs) for engineering drawings and Bills of Material (BOMs).
- Work with Core Team to manage projects timelines, scope, risks, and issues. Work cross-functionally with Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, NPI, Quality, Supply Chain, Regulatory, and Customer Care.
The essential requirements of the job include:
Hands-on experience (minimum 8+ years) in mechanical product design for automated or electromechanical systems, or experience in designing fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
• Experience in mechanism design involving motion and force analysis, such as:
Linear and rotary actuation, linkages, cams, latches, clamps, and guided mechanisms.
• Experience working with actuators, motors, springs, bearings, guides, or similar components.
• Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals:
- Engineering mechanics, dynamics, kinematic relationships (motion paths, constraints, timing)
- Material, force, friction, and tolerance considerations
• Experience applying DFM / DFA principles for automated assembly and manufacturability.
• Ability to generate design concepts, compare alternatives, and select solutions.
• Hands-on CAD modeling (preferred expertise in SolidWorks) and detailing, including release of 2D drawings with GD&T.
• Ability to independently lead technical design reviews and collaborate with cross-functional teams (such as Firmware, Electrical/Electronics, and Systems) as necessary.
• Recent role should show direct design ownership.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Exposure to simulation or analysis tools:
Motion studies (e.g., SolidWorks Simulation)
FEA analysis – structural, fluids, thermal (e.g., ANSYS)
• Experience supporting NPI (New Product Introduction) or early production builds.
• Exposure to regulated or precision equipment environments (Medical Equipment / Instruments domain is preferred but not mandatory).
• Knowledge of robotics.
