About the role

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

ALSO is seeking a Drive Unit Test Technician! You'll play a hands-on role in advancing next-generation rotating equipment and drive systems. In this fast-paced lab environment, you will perform detailed inspections, install and test drive units on dynamometers, and work closely with engineers to validate performance, reliability, and durability. You will help troubleshoot complex electromechanical challenges, build and modify test fixtures, and maintain a high level of organization and safety in the lab. If you are a mechanically skilled, detail-oriented problem solver with a passion for hands-on engineering work, and are open to supporting testing operations in the Bay Area, this role offers the opportunity to directly influence cutting-edge product development.

What You Will Do

  • Perform both visual and functional evaluations of rotating equipment
(motor/engine) and related components to identify defects, inconsistencies,
    and areas for improvement

  • Install drive units onto Dynamometers, conduct testing, and assess
prototype performance to confirm design assumptions and highlight
    process improvement opportunities

  • Partner with test engineers to develop and execute test procedures, plans,
and methodologies for verifying drive unit functionality, reliability and
    durability.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams —design, reliability, and testing—to
troubleshoot technical challenges and contribute to design refinement

  • Document test result, inspection reports, and technical observations clearly
and thoroughly to support informed engineering decisions

  • Maintain a high standard of organization and safety in the lab, including
    inventory, tooling, and equipment maintenance

  • Design, fabricate, and modify test fixtures and equipment to support drive
    system testing and validation

  • Be open to travel to support testing operations in the Bay Area

What You’ll Bring

  • High school diploma or GED required; hands-on technical training or
certification in automotive, electrical, or similar fields is a plus

  • Strong hands-on background in a comparable role, with a deep
understanding of engineering concepts and applications

  • Skilled in mechanical assembly and fabrication, with proficiency in
machine shop tools and expert use of hand/power tools
     1000V HV awareness

  • Capable of independently disassembling and reassembling
    electromechanical assemblies

  • Comfortable using standard lab instruments such as multimeters, DAQ
    systems, and power supplies

  • Experience with wiring harness design and fabrication, including
soldering, crimping, and following wiring diagrams

  • Strong understanding of physics and engineering fundamentals, with the
ability to apply principles to solve complex problems

  • Excellent documentation and written communication skills, with
    proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Exposure to LabVIEW, Python, or equivalent is a plus

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., with frequent standing, walking, and bending in
    a fast-paced lab environment

The pay for this position ranges from $45.00 to $60.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Perks & Benefits:
• Robust health coverage — excellent health, dental, and vision insurance covered up to 100% by ALSO, with FSA & HSA options
• One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates
• Rich fertility and family-building benefits with Progyny
• Flexible time off
• 401(k) match
