Oncology Data Specialists collect the data that provides essential information to researchers, healthcare providers, and public health officials to better monitor and advance cancer treatment, conductand improve cancer prevention and screening programs. As a professional data specialist , an OCS will capture a complete history, diagnosis , treatment (s) and health status for every cancer patients. Accurately identify, collect classify and code, stage anaylize and abstract clinical patient data for all malignat neoplasms and other reportable diseases , diagnosed and/or treated across Jefferson facilities. The ODS will work closely with Jefferson 's highly specialized team which includes physicians, administrators, researchers and healthcare planners. Working under the supervision of the Manager, Oncology Data Services at one or more of the Jefferson facilities to meet either Pennsylvania or New Jersey Cancer Registry and Commission on Cancer, American College of Surgeons reporting requirements to the the needs of the users of the registry data and to follow patients for the duration of their lifetime.Job Description
Responsibilities
Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson
Analyze, interpret & classify clinical information from the medical record, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology records according to State & Commission on Cancer requirements. Includes, but not limited to, demographic characteristics, disease history, diagnostic procedures, diagnosis, stage, extent of disease and treatment.
Abstracts & enters data into the Cancer Registry database(s) to maintain a comprehensive database(s) . Abstraction is at a minimum rate of at least 1.0 chart per hour with minimum 95% accuracy.
Identifies cases of reportable conditions by retrieving and referencing appropriate informational/clinical resources to comply with State and Commission on Cancer regulations. Tracks all living patients to obtain information on the quality and length of survival and treatment status to ensure proper follow-up.
Provides staff assistance to the Cancer Evaluation Services (tumor boards) and Cancer Committee to increase the knowledge of the physician members to the Cancer Registry.
Assist clinicians with cancer related studies and research projects to comply with commission on Cancer recommendations. Maintain confidentiality and security of patient data. Keeps abreast of all reporting and data collection requirements to maintain accurate Cancer Registry database(s).
Assembles & disseminates data collected by the Cancer Registry to ensure accurate research. Responds to requests made by other Cancer Registrars relative to case history, treatment or follow up within five working days of request.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Proficiencies):
Ability to read and communicate in the English language.
Ability to handle confidential information appropriately required.
Computer knowledge of specialized software for cancer registry.
Required Experience, Education, Certification(s), License(s)
Cancer Registry experience:
1-3 years minimum (4+ preferred)
ODS experience and training.
Associates Degree required.
ODS-C or ODS certification eligible required.
