Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.The chosen applicant will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of Electrical, Electronic, and Computerized Traffic Control Systems in Craven, Carteret, and Jones Counties, but also throughout the Division 2 area. The chosen applicant will also assist in the installation, testing, and inspection of new Traffic Control Systems and existing systems which are upgraded. The duties to be performed include installing traffic signal equipment, wiring detectors, installing and wiring controllers, tracing out electrical wiring diagrams to locate trouble, dismantling and reassembling components, replacing worn or faulty parts. Work will be performed without constant supervision and will be evaluated by the supervisor for efficient use of time and proper operation of Traffic Control Systems repaired and maintained. Skills of this position include general knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the safe and efficient use of tools, materials and test equipment used in the electrical/electronic trade, ability to diagnose source of equipment failures, ability to repair/maintain a wide variety of complex electrical equipment. Subject to overtime work when necessary and position is subject to emergency callback. The Electronics Technician is expected to maintain proper records of all signal work accomplished and keep an accurate record of time worked and all materials used via computer.
Additional Expectations:
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
The employee must be able to lift up to 80 pounds, shoulder high. Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 60 feet in height without accommodations. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instructions, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. The employee shall have the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signals and other traffic control devices. The employee must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and excessive heat conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. Safety toe shoes are needed.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge of standard test equipment used to diagnose electronic components.
- Experience reading and understanding schematic drawings and wiring diagrams.
- Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal supervision.
- Experience performing manual and physical labor in varied environmental conditions.
Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
