About the Role
The Chief Engineer oversees all maintenance operations for the facility, ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable functioning of building systems at FASTC. This role provides leadership and direction to a multidisciplinary team including HVAC technicians, plumbers, electricians, general maintenance staff, and central plant operators. The Chief Engineer ensures compliance with regulatory standards, manages preventive and corrective maintenance programs, and supports a high-quality environment for employees and the government customer.
What You'll Be Doing
- Oversee daily operation and maintenance of all building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and central plant equipment.
- Manage preventive maintenance programs to maximize equipment lifespan and minimize downtime.
- Conducts quality reviews of work performed.
- Ensure proper documentation of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Coordinate inspections, testing, and certifications for building systems and equipment.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance personnel across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, general maintenance, and central plant operations.
- Develop staffing schedules, assign work orders, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Organizes workflow to ensure a clear understanding of delegated tasks by employees.
- Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching.
- Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and service providers for specialized repairs or projects.
- Review proposals, monitor project progress, and ensure quality standards are met.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Maintains inventory control and accountability of tools.
- Ensure all maintenance equipment/tools are properly functioning and maintained.
- Ensures submission of daily, weekly, and monthly reports.
- Keeps leadership informed on maintenance and repair actions, making recommendations for efficiency.
- Contributes to high-level management status and planning meetings.
- Monitors overtime requirements and usage closely.
- Anticipates and promptly resolves operational problems.
- Provide necessary training to staff and maintains necessary reports and training records as required.
- Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Completes all training within required timeline.
- Performs all work in a safe and secure manner.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What We're Looking For
- 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance, engineering, or facilities management.
- 3–5 years of supervisory or team-lead experience
- Must possess a 3rd Class Engineer License.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance.
- Strong technical knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
- Experience with central plant operations preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license and a safe driving record, in accordance with company policy, to operate vehicles or equipment as required for the position.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Physical requirements include (but are not limited to) the ability to lift 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, carrying, stooping, bending, squatting, and reaching for long periods of time.
- Must be able to work on-call, alternate, and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
- Work may be performed indoors or outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around various hazards with appropriate PPE.
