Job Description:
This position sits within Microchip’s Human Machine Interface Division (HMID), responsible for the development of maXTouch® multitouch capacitive sensing devices.
Based in Whiteley, UK, the Business Unit is a recognised centre of excellence for capacitive touch sensing. You will work in a small, highly skilled engineering team, while being part of a wider organisation operating both locally and globally.
We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our R&D team. In this role, you will contribute to the definition, design, and validation of next‑generation maXTouch® controllers and system‑level HMI solutions. You will operate within a multidisciplinary environment, working closely across silicon, firmware, applications, and sensor/mechanical domains.
The ideal candidate is a genuine problem solver with strong analytical skills. The role requires solid digital design experience, including the ability to specify, implement, prototype, and verify RTL designs in preparation for new silicon.
Key Responsibilities
We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to architect, implement, and validate the Capacitive Touch Engine (CTE), spanning:
Analog front‑end (AFE) acquisition control
Digital signal acquisition and processing
Low‑level firmware development in assembly
You will work in close collaboration with the chip design and firmware teams to:
Define CTE acquisition sequencing and digital control for AFE‑driven sensing and signal processing
Specify, simulate, and verify RTL to ensure implemented IP performs as expected within the complete touch system
Develop performance‑critical assembly routines driving AFE acquisition and signal processing
Participate in silicon bring‑up and feature validation
Work with firmware, validation, and laboratory teams to root‑cause issues spanning AFE behaviour, RTL sequencing, and low‑level control paths
Requirements/Qualifications:
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Physics, or a related field
(Master’s degree preferred)
5+ years of relevant industry experience in digital and/or mixed‑signal IC design
Solid understanding of microcontroller architectures and products
Strong programming skills in Verilog, System Verilog, and C
Proven experience in RTL design and verification
Strong scripting skills using Python, MATLAB, or similar
A collaborative team player who is proactive, agile‑minded, discreet, well organised, and a clear communicator
Desirable Skills
Experience with PIC, ARM, or other embedded MCU platforms
Familiarity with Automotive SPICE™, ISO 26262, IEC/UL 60730, or functional safety development flows
Experience with capacitive touch sensing and signal processing
Knowledge of OLED, micro‑LED, or large‑format multitouch displays for industrial or automotive applications
We believe the right candidate may not meet every requirement today, but may be someone who can quickly grow into the position while making meaningful contributions.
