Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking two experienced emergency operations individuals with Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. The Emergency Operations Branch plays a crucial role in supporting the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR) and the NC Zoo by providing a variety of public safety services and programs. These efforts are aimed at creating a secure environment for guests, employees,
facilities, and diverse collections of animals, plants, and art. The range of services includes around-the-clock security, parkwide radio and telephone communication operations, emergency response and planning, management of life safety systems (such as sprinklers, fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, and fire alarms), medical services delivered by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), parking and traffic control, escorting vendors and contractual staff, conducting or assisting with tours, delivering public information and education, overseeing a lost and found program, and facilitating access to the Park after regular hours. The branch's operations are intricately integrated into the strategic and operational planning of the Zoo. The team within this branch is responsible for executing security operations in a manner consistent with the Zoo's identity as both a tourist destination and an accredited institution. This position operates under the direct supervision of the Emergency Operations Branch Supervisors.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Provide outstanding customer service to park guests.
· Aid guests in navigating the Zoo premises.
· Assist in escorting guests out of the park.
· Assist in parking vehicles and directing traffic.
· Manage lost or separated guests.
· Respond appropriately and assist in emergency situations.
· Always interact with guests and staff in a professional manner.

Recruitment Range: $31,200.00-$42,432.00

Position / Physical Requirement: 

  • Job offer is contingent upon passing a pre-employment screen conducted by assigned provider. 

  • This Position is designated as Essential/Mandatory and is required to work adverse weather events and may be called to work special events.

  • This position works a rotating work schedule, including weekends and Holidays. Hours 8:00AM-6:00PM.

  • Must be able to work split weekends, holidays and after regular work shifts.

  • Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.

  • Must have the agility and physical ability to regularly and safely: sit, bend, reach, stand, walk, lift and carry 30 lbs. (and up to 50 lbs. occasionally); endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles during the day and at night.

  • Must have, or be able to obtain, and maintain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Minimum Education and Experience

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

Sign On Bonus Eligibility
