Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Utility Person at our South Chicago Indiana Harbor Railroad location. The ideal candidate is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of rail cars which contain but are not limited to raw materials, plastic pellets, lumber and finished steel products throughout our rail network. These certified and licensed roles involve both the mechanical operation of the locomotive and the ground-level coordination of railcar switching and placement.

The role will be part of our United Steelworkers (USW) union compensation, benefits, and pension agreement.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Manipulate throttle and brake controls to move heavy freight safely; interpret gauges and cab signals to maintain proper speed and stopping distances.

  • Operate track switches, couple and uncouple cars, and connect air hoses.

  • Coordinator with yardmasters and dispatcher via two-way radio and hand signals to execute movement orders

  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of locomotives and railcars for defects; conduct federally mandated air brake tests.

  • Maintain accurate records of car placements, tonnage, and hours of service.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school Diploma or GED.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) certification for Engineers (49 CFR Part 240) and Conductors (49 CFR Part 242).

  • Must pass color vision and hearing tests as per FRA standards.

  • Ability to mount and dismount moving or standing equipment; stoop, bend, kneel in cramped spaces and hold on to railcar handhold/grab irons for long periods of time.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior Railroad experience

  • Ability to show proof of valid FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) certification for Engineers (49 CFR Part 240) and Conductors (49 CFR Part 242).
