Texas Performing Arts (TPA) is the professional arts presenting and producing program of The University of Texas at Austin. One of the largest and most active university-based performing arts centers in the U.S., TPA is an anchor institution in Austin’s arts, cultural, and entertainment landscape. TPA operates venues on the UT campus including Austin’s largest theater, Bass Concert Hall. Its public programs include Broadway in Austin; an international season of dance, theater, music and more; and the Texas Welcomes series of national touring artists. TPA is part of UT’s College of Fine Arts and engages students across the university in creative experiences. 

 

Purpose 

 

JOB SUMMARY: Help “keep the lights on” at Texas Performing Arts! Learn the ins and outs of nonprofit fundraising by actively contributing to securing funds to support Texas Performing Arts’ programs. The Communications & Fundraising Student Assistant will become part of an energetic and dedicated team. They will assist the fundraising office with a variety of duties including, but not limited to: creating creative and engaging fundraising materials (including videos, interviews, and graphic design elements), grant writing and reporting, file maintenance, mailing materials, data entry and evaluation, and helping with the Texas Inner Circle member’s lounge for select performances. This position is suitable for anyone interested in the arts, nonprofit management, marketing and communications, or business development and is looking for hands-on, real-world experience working in a performing arts venue Some evening work required, with the opportunity to experience performances and programs up close. Weekly hours are flexible. 

 

Estimated Hours per Week: 10-19 

 

This position is for a summer start with continuation into the fall.

Responsibilities 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist with data collection, entry, processing, retrieval and file maintenance. 

  • Assist with donor stewardship 

  • Assist with sponsorship activations 

  • Sort, assemble, organize, and distribute materials and mailings. 

  • Research possible foundation and corporate sponsor opportunities. 

  • Research and interview current TPA student employees, staff, and guests for creation of fundraising materials (including video creation) 

  • Write letters, reports, requisitions, and lists. 

  • Assist with special events – setting up, greeting guests, distributing flyers, etc. 

  • Represent Texas Performing Arts with a pleasant and professional demeanor through all interactions. 

  • Arrive on time for work and maintain a reliable attendance record. 

  • Dress appropriately for work in a casual, yet professional environment. 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Availability to work scheduled shifts during normal business hours (M-F; 9-5) along with some night and weekend events 

  • Effective, positive, and clear face-to-face and phone communication skills. 

  • Strong independent and collaborative work ethic. 

  • Working knowledge of computers and office equipment like: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 

  • Strong attention to detail. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Previous customer service experience. 

  • Experience with data reporting and analytics. 

  • Knowledge or interest in non-profit administration, development and/or performing arts 

  • RTF (Radio-Television-Film), Communications & Marketing, Business major or similar 

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or Final Cut 

  • Comfortable conducting video interviews with students, staff, guests

Hourly Rate

$12.50/hour 

 

Working Conditions 

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Prolonged screen time. 

  • Significant in person, over the phone, and written communication with members of the public 

  • Physically able to lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds. 

  • Works independently and unsupervised on a regular basis. 

  • Work collaboratively as member of a team with people of varied backgrounds. 

 

Work Shift 

Primarily M-F 9-5. Some night and weekend shifts for events.
