About the role
The Fleet Specialist is a proactive "self-starter" who serves as the vital technical link between Waabi’s autonomous vehicle systems and real-world operations. This is primarily an in-truck role focused on mission success through real-time technical monitoring and high-integrity data collection. When not on a mission in a vehicle, the Fleet Specialist drives operational efficiency through ancillary in-office support, ensuring data ingestion and fleet readiness are never bottlenecks.
You will…
Field Operations (Primary In-Truck Role)
- Mission Monitoring: Monitor vehicle system status from the front right seat during all manual and autonomous trips.
- Technical Preparation: Collaborate with engineers, dispatch, and triage to prepare vehicle compute systems for missions.
- Real-Time Data Logging: Use Slack trip threads to provide a time-stamped record of start/stop times, delays, and mission events as they progress.
- Performance Reporting: Accurately complete the applicable documentation before, during, and immediately after mission completion.
- Ensure all data adheres to strict formats: 24-hour time (e.g., 22:30), standardized vehicle IDs, and concise factual descriptions of issues.
- System Liaison: Provide critical system information to the driver to allow for full monitoring of vehicle behavior.
In-Office Support (Ancillary Efficiency Tasks)
When not assigned to an active vehicle mission, the Fleet Specialist supports the hub through the following:
- Data Offload Operations: Manage the signing in/out of drives, physical installation/removal from vehicles, and initiation of data offloads at ingest workstations.
- Technical Triage: Update triage threads (e.g. Slack, Jira) to communicate drive ingestion status or issues like damaged drives.
- Fleet Readiness: Connect vehicles to the network for remote diagnostics and verify all required applicable truck documentation is present.
- Maintenance Support: Conduct pre- and post-trip inspections and transport vehicles to/from maintenance vendors.
- Facility Coordination: Assist the Facility Specialist with light organization, supply restocks (e.g., cleaning supplies), and maintaining an organized 5-S garage environment.
- The requirements for this position involve a flexible schedule, including nights and/or weekends, often including multiple consecutive extended shifts of up to 14 hours (in compliance with FMCSA Hours of Service regulations for our CDL operators) and overnight travel. These situations are part of various responsibilities, including but not limited to the following:
- Traveling to a test track for software or vehicle testing.
- Participating in scouting or testing missions.
- Supporting Waabi teams at an industry event.
- Operating on a commercial delivery route.
Qualifications:
- Technical Aptitude: Must be comfortable working in Terminal and possess a strong understanding of the compute side of the truck.
- Data Integrity: High attention to detail regarding data entry; understands that data is only valuable if it remains accurate and unaltered.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills; proactive in providing updates to cross-functional stakeholders.
- Adaptability: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and identify "implied tasks”, which are necessary actions not explicitly assigned but required for team success.
- Background: High school diploma required. Prior experience in logistics, operations, or as a military veteran/new grad engineer is preferred.
- Logistics: Ability to work flexible hours (including weekends/holidays) and travel for out-of-area missions.
