Who We Are
Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Cleveland, Texas. Position Summary
The Material Handler is responsible for moving, loading, unloading, and storing materials safely and efficiently in a fast-paced industrial rail environment. This role plays a key part in keeping operations running by making sure the right materials are in the right place at the right time. The position involves operating equipment such as forklifts and cranes, inspecting incoming and outgoing materials, and maintaining a clean and safe work area. This is a physically demanding, hands-on role that requires strong attention to safety, reliability, and teamwork to support daily production needs.

This role will start on 2nd shift, though shift assignments may change over time in accordance with union provisions.

Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely load and unload materials onto pallets, racks, and shelves manually or using material handling equipment (e.g., forklift, pallet truck, overhead crane).
  • Perform quality inspections of materials during loading and unloading operations.
  • Read and interpret work orders to accurately pull, stage, and deliver materials.
  • Prioritize tasks to meet production schedules and operational demands.
  • Participate in cycle counts and physical inventory processes.
  • Monitor and communicate inventory levels to appropriate personnel.
  • Receive incoming materials from carriers and unload shipments.
  • Visually inspect incoming parcels for damage and immediately notify Quality Control of any issues.
  • Verify received quantities against shipping documentation through counting, weighing, or measuring, and accurately record data on forms or systems.
  • Operate material handling equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, mobile handling fixtures, and overhead cranes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment; identify and report hazards promptly.
  • Support quality initiatives and responsible care programs to help achieve company goals.
  • Maintain professional, effective communication with team members, supervisors, and customers.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read, interpret, and adhere to safety rules, procedures, and operational documentation
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality standards
  • Flexibility to work any shift, including overtime, in accordance with union requirements
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
  • Prior experience operating forklifts and/or cranes
  • Valid driver’s license with no more than three moving violations within the past four years
  • Ability to pass required forklift operation certification/testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an industrial repair or manufacturing environment.
  • Rail industry experience
  • Tank car knowledge or experience

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment with physically demanding conditions
  • Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Regular exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise
  • Requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, carrying, and rigging materials
  • Must safely operate equipment in confined or restricted areas
  • Requires manual dexterity and coordination for tool and equipment operation
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials or waste due to leaks or spills
  • Required to follow all personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
  • On-site role: 5 days per week, with overtime as needed
