Attributes We Value

We hire successful builders with founder-like energy who want real impact, accelerated learning, and true ownership. You bring strong role-related expertise and sharp thinking, and you’re motivated by our mission and operating principles. You move fast with good judgment, dig deep with curiosity, and make decisions from first principles, balancing speed and rigor.

You're humble and collaborative; turn zero‑to‑one ideas into real products, and you “get stuff done” end-to-end. You use AI to work smarter and solve problems faster. Here, you’ll tackle complex, high‑visibility problems with exceptional teammates and grow your career as we build the future of global banking. If that sounds like you, let’s build what’s next.

About the team

The Regulatory Reporting team builds and operates Airwallex's automated compliance reporting pipeline across 10+ jurisdictions globally. We own the full stack: data modelling, submission tooling, AI-assisted review, and the internal platforms that compliance teams rely on to meet their regulatory obligations.

We are a small, high-leverage team. Every engineer has direct impact on Airwallex's global licence health.

What you'll do

As an Engineering Lead you own both the technical direction and the day-to-day execution of the regulatory reporting engineering function. You lead a team of backend and frontend engineers, define the architecture, and act as the primary technical partner to Compliance, Legal, and Finance stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive the technical roadmap for regulatory reporting automation across all licensed entities and jurisdictions.

  • Lead architecture decisions across data pipelines, submission tooling, and AI-assisted compliance workflows.

  • Manage and grow a team of 4–8 engineers; provide technical mentorship, conduct code and design reviews, and set engineering standards.

  • Own delivery of regulatory reporting milestones — ensuring reports are accurate, on time, and auditable.

  • Act as the primary engineering point of contact for Compliance, Legal, and Finance; translate regulatory requirements into technical specifications.

  • Drive adoption of AI/LLM tooling to automate repetitive review, gap analysis, and interpretation tasks.

  • Define and uphold data quality, testing, and reconciliation standards across all reporting models.

  • Partner with the broader Core Banking engineering organisation on shared data platform capabilities.

Who you are

Minimum qualifications

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years in a lead or staff engineer role.

  • Strong backend engineering foundation — Python, Kotlin, or Java; comfortable with SQL at scale.

  • Proven track record leading delivery of complex, multi-stakeholder technical programmes.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous regulatory or compliance requirements into clear engineering designs.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; comfortable representing engineering to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in financial services, regulatory technology, or compliance automation.

  • Hands-on with dbt, Databricks, Spark, or BigQuery in a production analytics engineering context.

  • Familiarity with LLM/agent frameworks (RAG, tool-use, evaluation pipelines) for document-heavy domains.

  • Experience operating in a multi-jurisdiction, multi-entity environment.

  • Track record building robust reconciliation and data quality frameworks for financial reporting.
