Key responsibilities

We are looking for a scientist with expertise in analog electronics, applied physics, and high-accuracy measurements.

In this role, you will develop technologies for the next generations of industrial sensors used in modern electrical systems and power grids. You will be member of an international and multidisciplinary team of researchers at our Research Center in Mannheim.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • You develop highly accurate and reliable electrical sensors for current and voltage measurements

  • You conduct studies to understand the interplay between electric, magnetic, material and mechanical effects to innovate and optimize sensor designs

  • You design and build sensor prototypes and conduct test and validation activities

  • You develop experimental setups and evaluate and improve their measurement accuracy

  • You communicate complex technical results clearly to a wide audience, including technical experts, project partners, and general management

  • You protect intellectual property through patent applications and publish scientific articles

  • You continuously develop your technical expertise and acquire project management skills with training and on-the-job experience

  • You initiate, lead, and contribute to research activities with high business relevance for ABB

You will work across the innovation chain — from problem definition, conceptualization, design, validation and test, and project execution. You will contribute to German third-party funded research and internal projects, targeting future product technologies and offerings in electrical sensors for medium voltage applications.

Qualifications for the role

  • You hold a PhD in electrical engineering, applied physics or a related field, or an MSc with substantial relevant research or industry experience.

  • You bring expertise in sensing research with solid knowledge of analog electronics, applied physics and high-accuracy measurements

  • You have experience in magnetics for sensing applications

  • You have proven laboratory skills including the development of experimental setups and automated test equipment (ATE)

  • LabVIEW and PXIe proficiency are a plus

  • Experience with medium-voltage electrical applications is a plus

  • You are proficient in English; German language skills are beneficial
