General Description of the Job

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be a driving force towards data engineering excellence.

Working with other data engineers, analysts, and the architecture function, you’ll be involved in building out a modern data platform using a number of cutting-edge technologies in a multi-cloud environment.

You’ll have the opportunity to spread your knowledge and skills across multiple areas, with involvement in a range of different functional areas.

As the business grows, we want our staff to grow with us, so there will be plenty of opportunity to learn and upskill in areas such as data pipelines, data integrations, data preparation, data models, analytical and reporting marts.

While work is often based on business requirements and design concepts, you’ll also play a major role in the continuous development and maturing of design patterns and automation processes for others to follow.

You will report to the Head of Data Engineering.

Responsibilities

• Deliver solutions and patterns through Agile methodologies as part of a squad.
• Collaborate with customers, partners, and peers to identify data requirements.
• Help break down large problems into smaller iterative steps.
• Contribute to defining the prioritisation of the squad backlog.
• Build out the modern data platform, including data pipelines, integrations, preparation layers, data models, and analytical/reporting marts.
• Determine the most appropriate tools, methods, and design patterns to satisfy requirements.
• Proactively suggest improvements where issues are identified.
• Prepare data for use within APIs.
• Document, support, manage, and maintain the modern data platform built within the squad.
• Provide guidance and training to downstream consumers on how best to use the platform data.
• Support and build new data APIs.
• Contribute to promoting and educating the business on the value and better use of data.
• Comply with all Apex policies.
• Perform any additional duties instructed directly by the Managing Directors in accordance with Article 6.2 of the employment agreement.

Communication

The Senior Data Engineer works in direct contact with the rest of the team members and cooperates with other officers under the supervision of their Line Manager.

• Data Warehousing and Data Modelling.
• Data Lakes (AWS Lake Formation, Azure Data Lake).
• Cloud Data Warehouses (AWS Redshift, Azure Synapse, Snowflake).
• ETL/ELT/Pipeline tools (AWS Glue, Azure Data Factory, FiveTran, Stitch).
• Data Message Bus/Pub-Sub systems (AWS SNS & SQS, Azure ASQ, Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Data programming languages (SQL, Python, Scala, Java).
• Cloud Workflow Services (AWS Step Functions, Azure Logic Apps, Camunda).
• Interactive Query Services (AWS Athena, Azure Data Lake Analytics).
• Event and schedule management (AWS Lambda Functions, Azure Functions).
• Traditional Microsoft BI Stack (SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS).
• Reporting and visualisation tools (Power BI, QuickSight, Mode).
• NoSQL & Graph Databases (AWS Neptune, Azure Cosmos, Neo4j) – Desirable.
• API Management – Desirable.
