About the role

The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a water resources engineer to join our Calgary team. In this hybrid role, you will undertake challenging work on projects related to hydraulic and hydrologic analysis, civil engineering, and related technical activities. Additional responsibilities may include field assignments such as construction observation, surveying, and collecting hydrologic or water-quality measurements. The work may involve short-term, out-of-town assignments.

A successful person in this role will demonstrate strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite applications, strong written and oral presentation skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively as a part of a project team, and a flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs.

Your impact – key responsibilities

  • Technical analysis: hydraulic and hydrologic analysis.

  • Modelling support: experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling; familiarity with modelling software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, or PCSWMM.

  • Design support: open channel flow design, hydraulic structure design, and completion of plans and specifications.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr’s Calgary, Alberta, office. 

  • Work environment: ability to work in an office environment. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. 

About you – required core competencies

  • Education: B.Sc. in civil, environmental, or related engineering fields with a focus on water resources.

  • Software: experience with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling software, CADD, or GIS software.

  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada without the need for sponsorship by Barr Engineering and Environmental Science Canada Ltd., now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • M.Sc. or PhD in civil or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrology and/or hydraulics. 

  • Exposure to GIS, CADD, or other relevant programs.

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certified or the ability to obtain within one year.
