Position Summary:
Ames Construction is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil Superintendent to oversee field operations on large-scale civil construction projects. This role is responsible for managing daily site activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate all field personnel, subcontractors, and construction activities
- Plan and manage daily operations, including scheduling, manpower, equipment, and materials
- Ensure compliance with all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Monitor project progress and adjust plans as needed to meet deadlines and budgets
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, and clients to ensure project success
- Review plans, specifications, and submittals to ensure work is performed correctly
- Conduct regular site inspections to maintain quality control standards
- Lead and participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and jobsite briefings
- Maintain accurate daily reports, logs, and documentation
- Identify and resolve field issues proactively to minimize delays and cost impacts
Qualifications:
- 5–10+ years of experience in heavy civil construction (earthwork, structures, utilities, paving, etc.)
- Proven experience in a Superintendent or leadership role
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, equipment, and safety practices
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and schedules
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- OSHA 30 certification preferred
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with DOT, municipal, or large infrastructure projects
- Background working with unions and managing union labor
- Familiarity with project management and scheduling software
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain and stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift to 50 pounds as needed
